Frederick edulis will probably be your best choice. my four year old vine gave me at least 250 fruits this year and still producing. They are difficult to see. But there are 10 or so in this pic.

It isn't a question of freshness but the name of the variety, if it is a hybrid or an open-pollinated variety, that determines if it will grow true or not. Florida passion fruit, purple is not a varietal name. Without that info there is no way to know so all you can do is try to grow it and see what happens. There are at least 3 hybrid varieties that are purple that I know of and they will not breed true. And the seeds need to be really mature, well aged in the fruit, before harvesting them. Unfortunately many are picked before they are fully ripe so they can be shipped to stores. In that case the seeds are immature and may not germinate. Passion Fruit vines are normally grown from cuttings rather than seed but it is possible to do and it can be a fun experiment. Ken, I love that idea. Seems like it would make cleaning up the vines at the end of the season a lot easier too. I've also heard of growing squash in pots along a trellis. I'm thinking I might give the passionfruit a try. I have some dried bamboo so I'll probably build a bamboo trellis into the pot and train the vine around it. I had heard that the self-fruitful varieties can be easily hand pollinated with a paintbrush, which I have done before for other plants with success. I'll post some photos when I get it and get it all potted up.
