Mini Day Lily and others

One of my miniature day lilies has flowered, lost the tag though so don't know the name.

Five daylilies out in flower today. The mini is in front

This one is a bed full of Evening Sun Sunflowers

Nice lot of Day lilies there GH, do yours last long when they are picked.
I like the mini flower I have a few myself but they are all the same colour yellow.
Thats a great bed of Sunflowers I do like all the different colours....Cheers..MM.

No MM, they don't last. I generally don't pick them but I wanted to compare the mini one.

The sunflowers are a bit crowded as the kids planted the seedlings. I said about 50cms apart but they are closer to 30cms. That garden has a dk red frangi and a dwarf date palm in it but nothing else so I just plant a few annuals in it until the other plants are big enough to create shade.

The sunflowers are only half out yet so should look bright and cheery soon. At least this time they are facing the house. Last time I planted them in a different garden, they ended up facing the other way.

I love lilies for their stately appearance and scent... but hate the red lily beetle battle. We live along a river and worry about pesticide run off. So there are only two clumps in our yard. However, we do have many varieties of daylily. These are one of my favorite flowers... but my DH is not crazy about them. He thinks the long slender leaves and the same green tones look boring. The compromise was to place them among plants with different leaf textures and colors. And I have to agree with him that this helps to hide the ratty look of day lilies as they mature. (You're so right about that, Kevin.) A favorite new day lily is H. 'Light the Way' which I found at Bloomingfields Farms in Gaylordsville, CT. These are magnificent! The stems are very tall, which means the plant can be tucked behind shorter plants and the whitish blossom will peek out above its neighbors. Here is what LtW looked like the other day in our gardens. The flower color is more like the second shot...green and white tones. One "problem" ..... day lily clumps can get enormous and crowd out other things, even when divided. That happened in our small yard. The 6 tiny Hemerocallis 'Malaysian Monarch' fans that I planted years ago spread like the plague. We gave most of them away to a friend with lots of property. Molie

WANTED: Looking for a hardy mini lily...

I'm building my first patio pond out of a large flower pot and I'm looking for a mini hardy lily or lotus. Does anyone here have one they could divide and sell? I could trade, but don't have much yet, some water iris, pickerel. My water lilies are the "common" white ones not much for trading. I do have some ground cover plants, like creeping jenny and others. Thanks, Eija

Christie it is very fun to take a stamen of a pretty one and rub it on the pistil of another. I don't take good care of the resulting seeds though. If I would take the time to have some big pots of potting mix to throw the seeds in when the pods split, it would be easy to grow new day lilies. Several years ago I was really in to this. I crossed Stella with everything I had that I thought was pretty. I have some day lilies from those crossings. I like them but they would not win any awards. Also there is an old day lily called Cashmere which is fragrant; it was another I played with. Stawberry Candy is a good one to set pods. Not all crosses result in seeds. The biggest problem with this interesting job is finding places to plant the little day lilies. Each pod makes about 25 seeds.

Love your Day Lillies GH I know what you mean about the rain. Every time I want to go outside it comes down again "A Blessing". I have never seen that Frilly Dianthus before very unusual and pretty. Nice colour Sunflower too, And dont the plants look good with raindrops on them. Great Pics....Cheers..MM.

The Sunflowers are really beautiful, isn't it great the way they follow the sun.

Beautiful daylilies. I am a tag loser too. I tried really hard with all my new ones this year, but alas tags all gone. Oh well I can remember a few.
Sunflowers look most impressive too.

If the mini daylily is more yellow than the photo shows it is probably patchwork puzzle - it has the same centre markings as your photo. The terracotta/brick coloured sunflowers are my favourite - thankyou for sharing them.

Plantsplus, the colour of the mini is fairly close to the picture, a very pale pinky/apricot.

The sunflowers are still putting on a good display. Some of them have over 30 heads and buds.
