Rain!

After watching storms go past each side of us the last couple of weeks and only getting light showers, we actually got some worthwhile rain yesterday. 55mls in 3/4 of an hour, all up in 24hrs we had 74mmls. The tank and dam are overflowing. It was so heavy the views disappeared.

We had over 40ml of gentle soaking rain a couple of weeks ago spread over a few days and now this dam-filling rain.

What a great storm GH thats a nice lot of water you got up your way.
What a difference in the two pics with and without the rain.

Well, lucky you, Glenda! As Carol said, we got a little dribble from Mother Nature the other day, but nothing much. Sure hope we get some more this winter. We need it, our trees and shrubs need it.

The West coast has a very different climate from the East coast. On the West coast we have hot dry summers and wet, but relatively mild, winters. The vast majority of the rain during the year falls in winter. This does have an effect on what type of plant species do well. Another effect, if you look anywhere on the globe, the West coast for a continent always has an North-South divide, with the South being very dry and the North being very wet, but for the East coast it is kind of the reverse, with the South being very wet and humid and the North being a bit dryer. This has to do with the Coriolis effect and ocean currents, since the earth is spinning from West to East, currents have a natural way of seeming to drift West, that is in a counterclockwise direction. So Guangzhou, China has a seasonal climate very similar to Miami, Florida, while Los Angeles, California, has a very similar climate to Lisbon, Portugal.

Thanks Sherry. I moved Jamaican Me Crazy a few years ago, it was be side Jamaican Music and not doing well after 3 or 4 years. It has become one of my better plants since I moved it. Hope the same thing will happen with JM. The wind was nasty, was' t it Debra. We lost another cursed Bradford pear., I understand a lot of trees are down in the area. I hear that we will miss the worst of it today, which may be more your way. Thank you Kate!

One half inch in San Antonio, but also appreciated. A friend near Boerne said a tornado was spotted. An alert was issued and everyone was advised to take cover, but thankfully it didn't touch down. Interestingly her cat dashed under the bed just before the alert and came out just as the alert ended. On another but related subject; with all the showers we've had off and on we have surprisingly few mosquitoes. How about y'all?

Yes Marion, that is THE NEIGHBOUR. Still sits there all day, every day. At least the guava in the paddock is slowly filling out and the leopard is leafing up. Hopefully this rain will make them grow faster.

Rose, I'll have to find a photo before the gardens were done and also put another one on in a year or so. I'll have to dig through the photo albums as it would be pre-digital.

The garden on the bottom right has just been done up with day lilies. It has a couple of palms, a gardenia and hibiscus in it but needed something else and I had to find more room for the day lilies.

Can look at those pictures all day,reminds me of FNQ,it use to be lovely when the monsoon rains came,first it got windy and cool,then the clouds rolled in,frogs and toads sang louder and louder it got so dark mid afternoon,you could here the rain coming up the road by the sound on the tin rooves,then you couldn,t hear a thing as it simply came down in buckets,so lovely.Enjoy the rain Goldhills,cheers,greencroc.

Lucky you to a certain extent. We received some rain on Sunday, but not enough. A little bit yesterday which also was not enough.
By any chance do you live on the South Side of Gympie?

How wonderful for you, hope there's more to follow up.
Just a tip, my Leopard tree went COMPLETELY deciduous this year, I mean it's rained mored leaves than water so far. So you may need a "back-up" in the block-out stakes re the neighbour. Mind you they (Leopard trees, I mean) make a reasonable base for vines that don;t strangle.

Barbarah, we aren't on the Southside (which to others who don't know, is actually on the west side of Gympie, don't ask me why) we are a few kms north Gympie.

Yes we did have follow up last night. We had 26mls but the southern side (real south) of Gympie received 55 to 67mls depending on where you are. For storm news see the thread Marion put on in gardening in oz.

I know Leopards are deciduous, we planted it before they moved there and we wanted deciduous to let winter sun through. The frangi we moved there will also lose it's leaves but I'm hoping some papaws, etc planted there will grow up before then.

LOL GH, yes the southside on the west used to cause me some confusion, we have a small trasnport company and Gympie was part of my area, when we first started out. Our number one driver is a Gympie boy

Marion, no Wilton Rd is sort of on the south-east side. We are at Chatsworth on the north.

Barbarah, which transport company are you, as we use transport regularly and my husband knows most of the drivers? (Email me if you prefer)

It is amazing how small a world it is, we regularly meet people who we find know various friends or relatives.

BTW breaking news on the nosy neighbour - a for sale sign went up in front of their place yesterday. Yippee!

GH. Our company is Highway Carriers, we only have small trucks and most of our work is cabinet making/building supplies.
