Triciac - Garden arch

Ohhh, dear me, perhaps it's me! Sometimes computers are just sooo frustrating. Anyway, hopefully, here now is a picture of the new garden arch Trich; a hackneyed phrase but 'a picture saves a thousand words'. I took this when I thought I'd completed the work but a few days later I added a bit more, though it made little difference to the overall appearence. The clematis' are thriving now they have something substantial to climb on. I'll post another picture when they flower.

Hi there Bill. That is very nice.
Now if you had posted this in the Oz Garden Gallery you would probably get a lot more replies.

I think my husband is going to build a heavy duty trellis for me that would be protected in the back yard, fairly close to the house. For sure you would have to sink the legs in concrete. Our soil is pretty good where I live, but down deeper it is sandy. Whether the bush is on fortuniana or not wouldn't help anchor a structure down in 100 mph winds. The structure has to be able to take it, so I don't think we'll take a chance with an exposed arch. I think if the winds can bring huge trees down, it can bring a garden structure down. Oh well. I'll have to admire them in pictures. It's not worth the risk to me. Sandy

I agree about the rose and clematis suggestion being the clematis freak that I am, but I would not recommend Sweet autumn clematis as it reseeds with wild abandon in my garden and is considered an invasive weed in some areas--not to mention the fact that it may or may not have any scent to the flowers depending on how it was grown. If grown as a cutting from a plant that has fragrant flowers it will have a fragrance. If grown from a seed of a fragrant plant, it may or may not have any fragrance. An often overlooked clematis that has a fragrant bloom that I love is clematis viticella Betty Corning. The fragrance isn't one that will knock you over but is noticeable enough that I pick boquets of the flowers to bring into the house and enjoy the fragrance. It will rebloom if you cut it back hard after the initial first bloom cycle, is covered with flowers once it gets mature, and the flowers are sterile (no viable pollen)so there is no issue with it reseeding with wild abandon unless you purposefully pollinate it with another clematis' pollen. Mine is still blooming now intermittently now even with the frosts we have had. Here is a picture of a bloom from last week.

Holleygarden - I don't know about TX, but around here, this time of year, most stores are dying to get rid of any garden stuff, so that they don't have to store it. You can sometimes even negotiate for a price you can handle. Another idea is to make a twig arbour of some kind of local wood that will last. Cedar here is a good choice, not the sumac that I used!! lol. Other inexpensive ideas are old lengths of cattle/pig fence, that you can put into the ground and bend over. Just a few cheap ideas. Lisa, you don't so much create shade as create more sun. My pole beans loved my twig arbour this year, and produced lots of beans in turn. Nancy.

Cool, I love those programs, don't have one myself but love seeing the results people get from using them, especially when they show comparison shots like yours. I like both pictures, each serves a purpose. I think the second one allows you to imagine what another arch would look like. [great I think] Valerie

That's strange Bill as the Oz Garden Gallery is part of Australian GardenWeb.
I am sure I have seen you posting on Australian Native Plants, below is a link to the front page you will find all the forums on there.

Hi Bill, That is really a work of art. I am sure your wife will be delighted to see the clematis growing around something so special, Well done. They really love something to climb on. (clematis not wives!) Idont have any space in this tiny garden, I used to have a lot, so now mine have to clamber between the roses. Just go to the top of the page and you will see the garden gallery, that was put there before they upgraded things on Photobucket so now you can post pictures anywhere.

Oh yes, thanks mistymorn and trich. I did find and go into the Garden Gallery page, don't know how I've missed it! And Misty, your pics are not a little short of sensational. Your butcher-bird at the hanging water or feed bowl with the lichen covered bark of the tree in the background; and your Scaly Breasted Lorikeet: Those two photos could be entered into any photo competition and be hard pressed not to win a prize, and in my opinion first prize. Well done, wonderful capture of nature at it's most poignant best - Just proves a picture is far better than a thousand words.
Trich, thank you for your comment on my arch, I took another picture yesterday to send to a gardening friend in Canada - as winter is beginning to press its harsh gloom over there she feels cheered by my annual picture of the blooming Jacaranda.

I love this pic of the Jacaranda behind the Arch it looks so beautiful and you did a fantastic job on the Arch..

Well, thank you misty.... . Got to admit whilst 'Funnelweb' conjures up memories of my one-time (actually I had a few) experience with one of nature's superbly adapted creatures, the name 'mistymorn' brings back images of early mornings on bush-walking trecks in the (NSW) Blue Mountains back in my younger days: a little chill in the day's first breath; a mist rising up from the valleys below; a 'brew' of billy-tea over a reluctant fire. Wish I'd've thought of it!

What a lovely photo of that arch with the jacaranda behind it, well done Bill.
As for Misty, or Mary Ann, she has improved her photography so much since we first saw her pictures. Don't I envy her camera and close up lenses. I.m still waiting for her to give us the name of the sit she posts on. Come on Mary Ann let us have a look, please.
