See you all on Saturday and some of you on Friday evening at Fraga's restaurant 7.30pm.

I'm impossible to miss - short, bald, grey/white goatee, glasses, half a right ear and almost always wearing a hat (the current one is cream in colour)!

I'm definitely bringing tomatoes! Must check now before the heat hits the tomatoes. There might even be a Tasmanian Blushing Yellow. *fingers crossed*

About a year and a half ago when I was hunting for a Bluestar, I heard Tri-State carried them. I showed up unannounced which is apparently not how they did things. They were gracious enough to show me the one they had in stock at the time but to do a live demo I needed to make an appointment. Reading and interacting on this forum was enough to convince me of the merits and seeing it live albeit not hooked up, was enough to convince me that the hubbub about poor fit and finish was just bunk. It is a commercial looking machine that may not have some of the cosmetic attractiveness of Wolf or Viking but by no means was it shoddy or ill fitted. I bought one, never having tried it live, through Albert Lee. The salesman I worked with got the job done but was not very responsive to my need to be updated about status and at the time was not really savvy on customized placement of burners and different backsplash options and just said no rather than make a few calls. None-the less it arrived as did my enameled Vent-a-Hood and has worked like a champ since the day it was installed. As far as hard to clean as suggested by your salesman, it is harder than a smooth top range or a closeed burner. Any high performance range is gonna splatter grease and anything with cast iron features is going to take a little extra care. In no way has this been a show stopper for me. I love it for it's ability to perform. At times it goes a few weeks or a couple months with only a wipe down rather than the full on 1 hour or so to do a perfect tear down and scrub. If you you would like to see a 36 inch 6 burner in it's real life setting after a year and a half of daily use, and can find your way to Marysville at a time that works for all of us, I'd be glad to give you a test drive and an oppurtunity to scrutinize the thing. This would give a pretty good feel for the long haul. They all shine when they're new. It's good to see one after it's been a part of the family; minor scratches in the stainless and some scorching on the 8 inch backsplash. Both issues are treatable I've been told but as it's no big deal to me you can see how it holds up to normal wear without anal attention. Michaelp Marysville

The trouble with lists of frost hrady and dry hardy plants, is that they vary so much from area to area. Where my parents-in-law live in the wimmera, their sandy soil and lower rainfall means plants like lavender and rosemary will die if they aren't watered, whereas mine are never watered and do extremely well here on my heavier soils, colder climate and higher rainfall. My echiums, which are listed as 'frost sensitive' have been frosted many, many times and are growing like crazy things. I love them. As for trees - the five acre front of my block is planted out to about 1000 decidious trees. I love them at any time of the year. The silver birches look great in any season, as do the ornamental pears, with their shiny red bark. How would you ever enjoy the twisted limbs of the Scotch elm if the leaves didn't drop off once a year? We mulch with straw and manure. The large groves of birch trees were not watered through the drought and did very well. We are slowly manuring and mulching every tree. The ones we have done are growing like crazy and need very little attention. As for water - we don't get town water, so supply our own. I use it however I want to at whatever time of the day I want to. If anyone doesn't like it, come here and tell me face to face. (...and I will squirt you with the hose ;-) You want to save some of the planet's resources? Stop buying pre-prepared food in multiple packaging. Buy 'whole' food only and make your own. My absolute top plant for dry, un-mulched, un-manured sandy, clay soil? Ornamental grapes. They look good in winter too. Finally, I have lived, worked and gardened in every outback, stinking hot, dry and impoverished place in Australia. We moved here because of the climate and rainfall and I intend to plant, water, manure and mulch whatever I damn well please. If that offends anyone, as my nephew would say - talk to the eyeballs. Or try gardening in Paraburdoo without watering, mulching or manuring anything and see how much fun gardening can really be! Robyn

Hello Ray. Thanks for posting this thread. It is a timely reminder I think. Here is mine. Burnley Metro (BM) is a semi determinate regular-leafed early-midseason tomato with red globe-beefsteak tomatoes of medium-large size. Flavour is mild, with slightly acidic overtones. Clearly a variety suited to Southern Victoria. It is approximately 1 week later than Burnley Surecrop (BS). For all intents and purposes BM is much the same as Burnley Surecrop in appearance and flavour. BM produces a large number of medium sized red fruit in a short period of time. It has some susceptibility to early blight-like Burnley Surecrop. Burnley Gem (BG) is a determinate regular-leafed early tomato with medium-large red globe shaped fruit. Taste is very similar again to BM. BG displays some susceptibility also to early blight as well. BG is a good substitute for both BM and BS where space is limited or indeterminate/semi-determinate habit is not desirable. Will have seed of BG and BM for you Ray at Marysville-oh, and by the way, also will provide the grower of BG this season at Marysville as well! Cheers Craig

I gave the old Italian fellow next door to me at Marysville a mixture of tomato plants to make his "sauce" for the winter. Unfortunately he passed away in February and didn't see the results of his labours. The bed was fertilised with the leftovers of his wine production (seeds and stems etc) and a whole lot of alpaca manure. If you look at the picture below then I'm sure the benefit of all that organic matter will be obvious. (He was going to come to Tomatofest of course) These are a sample of what is on the bushes. If you know how big the tray is then I'm sure that you will appreciate the size of some of the fruit. Arrivederci Peter.

Tasmanian Blushing Yellow, Grub's Mystery Green, Nebraska Wedding, Purple Calabash, Santorini, Black Cherry, Black Plum, Jaune Negib, and Wild Tomato (only 1 in the picture, but I'll pick more later).

Anybody bringing a sharp knife along to cut the tomatoes?

I thought about that Spatz. Will bring a couple as I have some nice new ones (Mundial). I'll be picking ours tonight.. CHerokee Purple, Brandywine Suddeth, Jaune Flamme, Principe Borghese dried, BRYC and maybe some salsa if I have time to make it, with the Roma San Marzano.

Great, Mabb! As we will take our luggage on board, we won't be able to take sharp knives along.

Salsa..yeah...maybe I'll sneak a jar of salsa in as well. I have quite a few Jaune Flammees, too, but I think they will stay at home, as you'll bring some. :)

I've just made a big batch of Chocolate Chip Biscuits, and I hope to bring some along, too. Just have to make sure my mum won't find them. So, no promises there.

Good to see the Grub's Mystery Green making a showing. It's a pretty decent green, IMHO. But you be the judge. Sounds like some good ones will be sliced, diced and devoured.

Hello to everyone on the forum.
I hope all of you arrived safely home or at the next destination. It was a great weekend. I reckon it was fantastic; a great bunch of people, and it made the years trials and tribulations all worthwhile.
A special thanks to Mr and Mrs Lomatia for the accommodation, planning and the wonderful meal Saturday evening.
