I like your idea of a waterfall and babbling brook. Our property has a lot of rock, big and small. I am in the process of completing my waterfall/pond on a hill. While terracing I uncovered several large boulders that I just incorporated into the landscaping. The hardest part was the snow berry. Those roots!!! If you take roundup, straight, put it in a small spray bottle, and right after you cut the weed tree, spray the wound. I guess these trees create a coating over the cut, so it can just send shoots further down the root. I tried roundup on the snow berry with little success. Part of the leaves died, new shoots did go ahead a start after the other part died off. Good luck, it sounds like nature gave you the makings of a really nice rock garden--big rocks included.

Moles don't eat Hosta, voles do. Moles eat grubs and earthworms. Did you dig one up to see what was there? If it was voles you would see the roots and crown eaten away. Another thing you might see is little tunnels in the mulch or holes alongside a cement patio or walkway. Did you mulch heavily? Voles like that. It allows them to move about easily without being seen. If I think I have voles I usually check by putting a piece of apple under a broken pot and covering it up well. Put it out at sundown and check it in the morning. Voles will have consumed it or eaten it partially. If you are sure voles are the problem you can do several things. 1. You can trap them. This has limited effect since they breed faster than rabbits. Voles are a major food source for Hawks, Fox, Owls and other predators so they depend on an amazing rate of procreation to survive. 2. You can poison them. This can be effective, but it's dangerous, especially if you have pets. Some people dump poison down a hole and put a rock over it, but the directions on the poison specifically prohibit that as a safe use of their product. The other thing is that predators who eat poisoned voles consume that poison also. There are research reports that show evidence of poison in the systems of Red Tail Hawks. 3. You can go to Dollar Tree and buy a $1 wire wastebasket and plant your Hosta inside that. Leave the rim of the basket one inch above the soil line. This will prevent voles from eating the crown of your plants and they will live to grow for another year. 4. You can try the new systemic tablets from Repellex. I haven't tried these yet, but my sister likes them. You plant a tablet or two in the root system of the Hosta and it makes the whole plant roots, leaves, and flower scape taste like hot sauce. Repels rabbits and deer also. $20 for 50 tablets. Link below. Here's a picture of a Hosta inside a wire wastebasket. The Hosta in the center has a homemade wire barrier made from hardware cloth. I've looked at some pages at DG today, with no troubles. I cannot imagine what may be causing your troubles. Sounds unusual to see just a blank screen with no explination. I hope it clears up for you soon!
