Hi Jeff. The seed is formed at the base of the flower. A small capsule like structure forms as the flower matures. When the flower is withering the structure begins to dry out and become brittle. Save these (ie the old flower from where it attaches to the stem)in a paper bag. When dried out you should be able to shatter the base with your fingers to release the small seed. When spring arrives you can sow the seed. Be aware that if you have a hybrid plant you may not get much seed. The flowers last quite a while on the plant, that is one of the good things about growing Kangaroo Paws.

I've just inherited a garden with two kangaroo paw plants. As advised on various websites,I've pruned the stems of spent flowers but I'm hesitant about fertilising the plants with normal fertiliser. Is it true native plants need special fertiliser? Could someone please advise me? I'd like to look after this garden properly.

Hi You should not feed sick plants and be careful which fertiliser you use as some Natives don't like phosphorus How about asking here on the Oz Garden Galley down the bottom of this Arch and Clematis link Yes we are discussing Kangaroo Paws Here is a link that might be useful: Black Kangaroo Paw.

Pretty sure they are all supposed to be evergreen. They are rather sensitive to poor drainage and too much water, maybe you should check your soil and water levels. They also can get mealy bug near the crown down in the leaves that can make the leaves go brown eventually. Check for that too.
