This is the second year of fruit for us we planted them to stop some evaporation from our garden water tanks and they're working well and we have lots to eat

What a marvelous idea Bev, that would certainly help to keep the tanks cool.
Love them I used to make the best Pav with bananas, and passionfruit loaded down with cream.
My only son would help me take out all the seeds, he hated them but not the rest.
A healthy looking vine with plenty of fruit I bet you enjoy them...Cheers..MM.

It isn't a question of freshness but the name of the variety, if it is a hybrid or an open-pollinated variety, that determines if it will grow true or not. Florida passion fruit, purple is not a varietal name. Without that info there is no way to know so all you can do is try to grow it and see what happens. There are at least 3 hybrid varieties that are purple that I know of and they will not breed true. And the seeds need to be really mature, well aged in the fruit, before harvesting them. Unfortunately many are picked before they are fully ripe so they can be shipped to stores. In that case the seeds are immature and may not germinate. Passion Fruit vines are normally grown from cuttings rather than seed but it is possible to do and it can be a fun experiment. Ken, I love that idea. Seems like it would make cleaning up the vines at the end of the season a lot easier too. I've also heard of growing squash in pots along a trellis. I'm thinking I might give the passionfruit a try. I have some dried bamboo so I'll probably build a bamboo trellis into the pot and train the vine around it. I had heard that the self-fruitful varieties can be easily hand pollinated with a paintbrush, which I have done before for other plants with success. I'll post some photos when I get it and get it all potted up.

Passionfruit don't taste all that good anyway and are close to a wild fruit. I think in this case a seed-grown fruit will be likely to taste pretty much the same or very similar. You will often have more variation with fruits that were developed through hybridization or were bred by humans. Even in those cases you typically have about a 25% chance it will taste equally as good, a 50% chance it will be almost as good, and a 25% chance it will be worse. (And very rarely it might turn out to be better)

I had a huge passion vine when I lived in Venice (CA), and I would get 60 to 80 fruits a day during the summer, and so I bought a Juiceman juicer to extract the juice, which is extremely sour. I used the juice to make sorbet, and I added a simple sugar sweetener to the juice to make it sweet. To make the sorbet from this mixture, I put it in a shallow rectangular pan and put that in the freezer. Then, every so often, I would stir the mixture with a fork, to break up the ice crystals, and when it was sufficiently frozen, I put it in a blender, to smoothen the texture, and then I put it into containers to store in the freezer. Because I used fresh passion fruit, the sorbet had a wonderful and delicate fragrance, reminiscent of the flowers.

Healthy looking vine. Keep you going in fruit for a while. I was training my vine on the chook pen fence but it was neglected for a few weeks and escaped up a tree. Now if frightens the chooks when it rains passionfruit.

MM, taking out the seeds? That would take ages.

Well it did actually, but he refused to eat those big Ants as he called them.
Yes I would not mind a huge slice of that again but sadly what I eat today I wear tomorrow.
So I have given up all the good thing of life ecxept chocolate, that I cant.
