I wondered the same. I think everything is involved; the climate, heat, humidity, and our subjective feelings.

For example, last year my yellow rose bed had a different fragrance than this year; this year I can't sense any smell in my yellow roses (last year it was fabulous), but again, my red roses are fragrant as heaven.

I believe it was because of the weather; it was February last year when I bought this new house and the roses were in their full bloom. Plus, the weather was different.

Also, when I work in my garden and am all dirty and my nose is completely dried out, I can't smell a thing; then again, after some break and a nice shower (it really helps if you rinse your nose with salty water), when I come to smell my roses again .. they smell like heaven -- again.

Generally, rose fragrance doesn't do well in extreme heat; it simply disappears in air. I've also found that more humid and cooler weather make same roses smell better. That's why they'll smell stronger in an English garden than in a typical Australian garden. But again, here they'll grow much better and produce more flowers throughout whole year.

In this coastal area in WA wind blows constantly (it's really annoying sometimes) and often you can't sense a darn thing outside; but once you cut those flowers and bring them inside your home; well, it's another story.

In other words, you have to create an atmosphere to enjoy your roses.

Here in Qld they dont last long at all except for a few, they are mostly here one day gone the next.
I do find that roses taken indoors and sitting in a vase have a much stronger perfume
As Tom above said
I go out every morning at 5am and pick mine now as they last so much longer indoors..
I find some roses so overpowering I have to leave them out on my back decking.
But I have the same problem with Jasmine, Gardenia and Daffodils.
Maybe you have the ones with little or no perfume. Cheers..MM.

Which rose as a last rose to plant?

Fragrance is so subjective. To me, SdlM is not really that fragrant, and it's more of a sweet/powdery scent than a damask/old rose fragrance. Most of the Portlands have that damask scent, as do many Hybrid Perpetuals and some of the Austins. In my garden, Eugene de Beuharnais has it the strongest - it will draw you to it from ten feet away. The Prince has that smell, too. So does Marbree, a mottled-blossomed Portland that Jeri recommended, that's clean as a whistle and reblooms reliably. (In its second season in my garden, it's a small, tidy plant.) Of course, performance is all about location. I'm in hot, dry Sacramento, so my experiences won't be anything like yours. Here, SdlM is temperamental. Powdery mildew, blossoms tend to ball (although they opened much better once the plant matured), and some browning edges. When it is good, it's wonderful. I came very close to digging it out a few years ago. Anita

Fragrance! Which roses do you HAVE to have?

Fascinating to read in the article you linked to, Anna-Lyssa, how researchers scientifically measure the scents within and around flowers. The variations in results referred to suggest to me that the variations that rose growers report in how they experience a particular rose's scent may not be always necessarily due to different clones of the plant or to differences in the person's capacity to smell, but to external factors too, such as regional differences, including the effect of different soils, climates and microclimates and other very specific localised conditions. Maybe this is related to the concept of 'terroir' in wine grape growing, where the flavour of a finished single-variety wine can be greatly influenced by the soil and location in which the vines grew; even whether they were on, for example, the southern slope or the eastern flat of one particular field!

Tea rose scent

I'm able to detect only a moderate degree of fragrance in Tea class roses from 4 to 7 typically on a scale of 10, with 1 being more fragrant. The types of scent vary quite a bit with brewed black tea being a scent note in most, but not all. -stone fruit is a common secondary note. The Tea roses that smell the best to me are: 'Anna Olivier' 7.5 is the most strongly scented Tea rose to my nose. Perhaps because it has Bourbon in its' breeding. To me, it has a penetrating scent of rose, allspice and honeyed peach, followed by a hint of musk, and ending with a bright note of brewed black tea. A complex and marvelous scent. 'Etoille de Lyon' 5 to 7.3 (the strongest was on clone "A" which had variation among the degree of scent on its different parts of the bush) A delicious blend of honeysuckle, and cream that one author described simply, as smelling "delicious". 'Comtesse Emmeline de Guigne' 6.8. in strength. An enticing blend of rose, apricot and sun warmed plum. "Mrs. B.R. Cant" 7. has a good degree of scent, which I don't love because it smells to me, mostly of camphor with a bit of myrrh. 'Duchess de Brabant' 5.ish. a clean scent of fresh raspberries. 'Mrs. Dudley Cross' 4.8. brewed black tea, with a hint of sweet white sugar, and a hint of vanilla at the end. All the other Tea roses that I've smelled at San Jose Heritage, and vintagegardens have a pleasant but light tea scent, usually with notes of mixed floral and/or stone fruit. It is the "exquisite delicacy" of the style of every Tea rose blossom, that seduces my heart again and again. Though some damask scented roses may be more strongly scented, Tea is for me, the best of all rose classes for beauty of bloom, and bush. Luxrosa.

Making soap scents last
Q

Each FO and EO will have a lifespan of its own, but there are a couple of things you can do to make sure that the life of your oils will last. - Store all of your oils in glass amber bottles and keep them away from heat and sunlight. This is much more true for EOs (because they are more volatile), but some FOs also contain essentials and therefore must be stored the same way. - When purchasing EOs in large bottles, be sure to transfer them to smaller bottles leaving as little empty space at the top as possible. This will reduce their evaporation rate and will keep the scent more consistent throughout the whole bottle. - Wrap your soaps entirely in a breathable material such as tissue paper or a paper soap box. This will lessen the rate that the scent dissipates, but still allow your soap to breathe as it continues to cure past the 2-4 week waiting period. If you'd prefer not to wrap them due to shrinking, place your soaps in a tupperware container after they've been allowed to sit out for 2-4 weeks. - Try adding a little powdered benzoin to your soap (not for use in M&P). You can find it at Mountain Rose Herbs http://www.mountainroseherbs.com Hope this helps! Burgundy
