do overseas roses have better,longer lasting scent?

i am new to growing roses ,but have always loved the sweet fragrances of roses,especially over seas, i am growing the most fragrant roses available here but find the scent is nowhere near & the flower once opened hardly lasts,, is it me or?

I wondered the same. I think everything is involved; the climate, heat, humidity, and our subjective feelings.

For example, last year my yellow rose bed had a different fragrance than this year; this year I can't sense any smell in my yellow roses (last year it was fabulous), but again, my red roses are fragrant as heaven.

I believe it was because of the weather; it was February last year when I bought this new house and the roses were in their full bloom. Plus, the weather was different.

Also, when I work in my garden and am all dirty and my nose is completely dried out, I can't smell a thing; then again, after some break and a nice shower (it really helps if you rinse your nose with salty water), when I come to smell my roses again .. they smell like heaven -- again.

Generally, rose fragrance doesn't do well in extreme heat; it simply disappears in air. I've also found that more humid and cooler weather make same roses smell better. That's why they'll smell stronger in an English garden than in a typical Australian garden. But again, here they'll grow much better and produce more flowers throughout whole year.

In this coastal area in WA wind blows constantly (it's really annoying sometimes) and often you can't sense a darn thing outside; but once you cut those flowers and bring them inside your home; well, it's another story.

In other words, you have to create an atmosphere to enjoy your roses.

Here in Qld they dont last long at all except for a few, they are mostly here one day gone the next.
I do find that roses taken indoors and sitting in a vase have a much stronger perfume

I go out every morning at 5am and pick mine now as they last so much longer indoors..
I find some roses so overpowering I have to leave them out on my back decking.
But I have the same problem with Jasmine, Gardenia and Daffodils.
Maybe you have the ones with little or no perfume. Cheers..MM.

Fragrance is so subjective. To me, SdlM is not really that fragrant, and it's more of a sweet/powdery scent than a damask/old rose fragrance. Most of the Portlands have that damask scent, as do many Hybrid Perpetuals and some of the Austins. In my garden, Eugene de Beuharnais has it the strongest - it will draw you to it from ten feet away. The Prince has that smell, too. So does Marbree, a mottled-blossomed Portland that Jeri recommended, that's clean as a whistle and reblooms reliably. (In its second season in my garden, it's a small, tidy plant.) Of course, performance is all about location. I'm in hot, dry Sacramento, so my experiences won't be anything like yours. Here, SdlM is temperamental. Powdery mildew, blossoms tend to ball (although they opened much better once the plant matured), and some browning edges. When it is good, it's wonderful. Fascinating to read in the article you linked to, Anna-Lyssa, how researchers scientifically measure the scents within and around flowers. The variations in results referred to suggest to me that the variations that rose growers report in how they experience a particular rose's scent may not be always necessarily due to different clones of the plant or to differences in the person's capacity to smell, but to external factors too, such as regional differences, including the effect of different soils, climates and microclimates and other very specific localised conditions. Maybe this is related to the concept of 'terroir' in wine grape growing, where the flavour of a finished single-variety wine can be greatly influenced by the soil and location in which the vines grew; even whether they were on, for example, the southern slope or the eastern flat of one particular field!

Portlands have been one of my two favourite rose types since I discovered OGRs. Hope you enjoy the photos. I find them small lovely tight bushes for the most part and very floriferous.Unfortunately I am not a fragrance buff so can't tell you much about them. I am more a form and color fellow and this rose type is perfect for my one (with protection). i have lost a couple to winter but retain the photos but for the most part they -do well with protection. Deer tend to browse and graze where they feel most secure. They will tend to graze the areas where there is enough cover for them to hide in, where they feel safest with the most secure escape routes. In those conditions, they will select those plants which appear to be the best "produce". Just as we select the most succulent vegetables, they select those with the most succulent growth. They obtain water as well as nutrients from the plants, like rabbits and other grazers do. If they're hitting specific plants in your garden, it's most likely due to them being located where they feel safest. You can try moving them elsewhere and/or planting "stinky" plants around them. Deer use their sense of smell as one of their major self defense systems. Fill the air with strong smells and it "jams their radar", making it difficult for them to smell coyotes, people and other dangers. If they're appropriate, lavender, rosemary, santolina and other strong smelling plants (even a dense planting of basil) can help prevent them from grazing your roses and are a LOT nicer and easier than having to either cover them with netting every night (as some of my old beach clients did nightly) or using a smelly protectant (coyote urine, blood meal, rotten eggs, or other chemical repellent) YOU will smell. The alternative would be a sufficiently tall fence to block them, or two, shorter fences placed about four or five feet apart, making it difficult for them to jump over. Good luck!
