Stephanotis and friend (pink dipladenia). Nothing sweeter than the scent of stephanotis when in full bloom; it's been in about 7 years and being a slow grower - it's a climber - it's taken most of those to get 3 to 4 metres over this archway. The volume of blossom this year is better than ever; maybe it's the extensive lack of rain!

I have one on my window sill, but it always attracts some weird bugs. Just discovered some black ones. Will wash it with Safer's soap, hopefully it will work, till next lot of bugs appears.

Very nice. Those and Jasmin are great for growing over the old country dunny out the back.

You may want to give them some more time as these seem to bloom as part of a specific cycle that includes quite a bit of growth before the buds form out of leaf nodes, for bloom. Mine recently completed some great blooming (in 2 flushes) and now that it is done for the moment, I'll be repotting some time this week. I repotted last year after its bloom (where it was blooming when I bought it in March) from its original 6" to an 8"... and now I need to go up again to a 10". I have actually done some fertilizing of mine - mainly Ironite and some general 20-20-20 perhaps once a month. In your case, patience may be a virtue as the fragrance is really worth it and my little hummingbird even nectared from mine! It could be that I am letting it get potbound before potting up so that may be helpful in triggering a bloom. OT: Stephanotis floribunda seeds

Well, Aggie was generous enough to send me a whole fuzzy mass of her S. floribunda seeds, so I thought I'd post an update on how they're doing. I seeded 5 containers, 3 with lids and 2 without. I wanted to see the difference between letting them experience a wet/dry cycle (never completely dry) versus keeping them moist and humid the whole time. Here they are after a couple weeks: Unlidded flats: Lidded flats: As you can see, the plants in the flats that stayed damp and humid grew faster. Just in case anyone's worrying, after another week, there were just as many little seedlings in the "unlidded" flats. It just took them a little longer to get going. Well, thank you again Aggie for the super adorable adorable seedlings.

I* had a nursery many years ago. I*'m 83 years old now and I just got some bright ideas (at my age?) about plants. I would like to purhase 2 plants of stephanottis floribunda (bareroot of course) for my own use, just to see it grow and flower (it bring back many memories of all the tropicals I grew)Also, if you would like to chat occasionally about plants, I wuld be delightes (taxonomy only, no local names, I would be lost). WOW! Thanks guys for all your feedback. When I ordered the "Steph" and read up on the care of the plant-"Full Sun, Partial Sun"- I thought this was going to be a no-brainer. Thanks for alerting me that over-exposure of the sun down here could prove to be fatal. I'm going to leave it potted so I can monitor it's growth and move it around and see how it responds. Being what I naively thought was a native plant of Hawaii, I assumed it would love a hot and sunny location. As far as the vanilla orchid, Karyn-it's happy and growing but as of yet, not flowering yet. I've only had the orchid for a couple of weeks but I check it each morning for blooms. If and when it does, I'll let you know. Now, I'm interested in finding out more on the Queen's Wreath. What color are the blossoms? Sounds like a good climber for our privacy fence. Thanks again everyone!

Very nice. I love the 2 colours. I think that type of Dipladenia is now known as a Mandevilla. Is the scent like a Jasmine smell on the Steph? I think ur onto something with the dry spell an more flowers. Ive noticed certain types of plants prefer a dry spell a couple of months before they flower. One in particular is Oleander. And it appears Jacaranda are the same.

Hi Fern_Freak.
Northern Beaches, Sydney, brings back fond memories. Well the scent is different from jasmine but unique in its own way. Plants going through an extended dry period will often empathise their flowering period as it (they) thinks (for want of a better description) it's about to die: the Poinciana's are putting on the best show I've seen in over 13 years - they're all a mass of flowers - and I've never seen it so dry for so long!

Where were you from before you moved? I'm at Newport Beach. Ive only ever seen one Poinciana around here and that is at Palm Beach. The shape is truly magnificent. A few houses down there is a Tree Waratah which has taken off over the last couple of years and has just put on a great display too.

Use to live at Allambie Heights, was there for over 30 years. Sold up on retirement and moved here, just south-west of Tweed Heads.

What nurseries did u go to when u lived at Allambie? I go to Wirreandra abit and a couple out west. Not much to choose from. Do u have many where you are now and have u had to adjust your choice of plants much?

Wirreander is one I try to get to for natives when I'm down there with a car. I'm not too sure is that's the one near the Bamboo-cum-bonsai nursey at Terry Hills or the one at Tumble-Down-Dick-Hill not far from the Ba-Hi temple there, but both are good for natives. Bonds at Terry Hills has improved and I also visit there. Also, too, the plants sales at the Royal Bot. Gardens in Sydney is always worth a visit. Up here! The last reasonable nursery nearby recently closed down, so I rely on Bunnings and an occasional trip north to Nielsen's Natives on the outskirts of Brisbane, an hour's drive north. I've also bought via mail-order when I see something in a catalogue worth a try.
