Whos got tomatoes left??

I am still picking my Nepal X Tommy Toe, Citron Compacts and Russian Reds. Enough for fresh eating at the moment. Grubs Green is coming on slowly and I should have some fruit in a week or so.

NxTT is a beast. Easily as prolific as Tommy Toe.

Got a new crop sown in the greenhouse but I dont know if I will get any fruit from them before winter shutdown.

Hows everyone else going??

I've potted up some of my extra seedlings and bunged them in the glasshouse so we'll wait and see. At Marysville they're just coming in. I'll check this W/E. Should really be ready for March 4th. (I hope)
In Melbourne, some have slowed down, some have been disasters and some like Black Russian, JF, BC are still going strong. Still a bowl of fruit every couple of days.

I have a Roma variety i bunged in a pot cause i only just moved and was a bit late to start heaps and picked 3 toms the other day with 5 fruit orso left (i shoulda had it in a bigger pot :P) and i had this scraggly little plant in a pot at the shop which i took home and now it has a bit of fruit, :P im waiting for next season to branch out

Thought this might be a good time of year to resurrect this thread! :- ) I run my extra tomatoes through the food processor and then freeze them in 2-3 cup containers. No peeling, blanching or cooking. I really don't notice the peels when I dump it in a pot of chili - except that it tastes fresher than canned. As for recipes, I use one (modified) that I found online when I was looking for a way to use up ground turkey I found on sale. Turkey Pumpkin Chili Brown one pound ground turkey with one diced medium onion. Then add a can of beans (canelloni beans are my favorite), 2 cups diced tomatoes, 2 cups of pumpkin puree, 1 1/2 T chili powder, salt, and a bay leaf. I add pumpkin pie spice and chopped cilantro to taste. Then serve topped with shredded cheese and sour cream. The pumpkin doesn't really add much flavor on its own, but thickens the soup and gives you extra veggies. (If you don't like pumpkin, I'd season with something different than pumpkin pie spice, though.) If you get the meat on sale and the veggies from your garden, this is a dirt cheap, hearty soup for fall or winter. Don't expect it to be spicy like regular chili - just a nice fall soup.

My Josephine and Franziska Maria aren't back up yet. I thought I would help them develop a better root system by cutting them back to the ground. What a dummy! That was almost 2 months ago now! (Both were in their third year now, and still gangly and only had a couple vines) I still hold out hope that next year will see them back. I will do no more cutting back to the ground unless they wilt on me. I promise, cross my heart, and hope to be a better gardener lol..

I potted up seven more seedlings today, and repotted a couple that I purposely put in small pots, to repot a little bigger as they matured. Trying a couple different techniques with babies this year. Some outside, some inside, some in the same pot until they go in the ground, some repotted twice. And the grand tally _ I have 29 plants, assuming not a single one of the other seeds I have started makes it _ and some of them are looking pretty good. I'm actually starting 15 different varieties this year looking for the best of the best for my conditions. I can't believe I went this nuts! And now y'all are making want to look for a couple other varieties! Someone stop me! For those going to Ricky's swap, I'll have a bunch of tomatoes there. I planted two of each, a few more of some, and I clearly don't have room for that kind of tomato patch on my little 1/3 acre! Seriously, if you want tomatoes and don't want to bother starting them, I'm going to have waaaay too many. And if anyone wants to start some, email me, I still have way too many seeds because I wanted to try so many varieties. Tomorrow: I finish hoeing up weeds in the veggie-bed-to-be (it goes to weeds in the summer, with a few beans, in hopes they improve the soil a little.) And I will mulch it tomorrow. I swear. Yes, that was my plan for today, but gosh it was hot. It won't be so hot tomorrow. LOL. I've got some cow manure I'm going to rake in. Already spread some compost. Then I'll let it sit mulched, with newspaper underneath, for a few weeks before I set out the plants in October. I can't wait! I'm also thinking of trying to do a raised bed in an area where the soil is particularly poor. Actually, I'm thinking of putting tomatoes just about everywhere! I've got a couple of those grow bags, came free a couple years ago with an order of I don't remember what. I'm wondering if I can put some cherries in them and hang them on the wall? And I'm seriously planning to take an unused garment rack out into the yard this year to put a hanging tomato planter on and then plant beans under it, with string for them to grow on. Is that crazy? The soil there could use some bean improvement. The one I can't get to start: Everglades cherry. That surprised me. I thought they were pretty easy. Susannah

Tomato Seeds left in Packet until Next Year?

The packed by date found on some seed packs from some companies means just that, the date when the seeds were packed. it tells you nothing about when the seeds were produced as in seed age. In Europe they use a best used by date, which I think works better. That being said I've never thrown out one seed of all the several thousands of varieties I've grown and most are stored in plastic screw cap vials but lots of them in just normal envelopes. For any seed under 5 yo I sow seeds straight out. From 5 to about 10 years I double sow, and for much older seeds I have to fiddle around with them with some treatments. My best wake up to date was seeds of Septmeber Dawn that were 22 yo but the record is waking up tomato seeds that were documented to be 50 yo. There are two commercial places where I know they sell no tomato seed over two years old and that's Sandhill Preservation and Glecklerseedmen. There may be others who claim the same but I don't know of them/ So I store my seeds at ambient temps and that's worked out fine for me where I live and garden. Carolyn

I have to pick a heap of tomatoes today. There aren't many green ones left on the plants. But I just might (fingers crossed) have a tomato left for Marysville.

Still picking Quick Pick, La Casa di Apulio, Black Russian and Arcadia. Have jettisoned the Stupice which are still producing lousy tasting tomatoes and the Tigerella turnes out not to be what is claims - some unknown orange beefsteak type so its been outed.

I'd appreciate a favour from you guys. On Saturday there is a particular cosmic pattern that I suspect will affect tomatoes, anything else growing on vines like pumpkins and vines in general. It's to do with the calcium and silica rerlationship in stem strength. The pattern last until Tuesday and if you could find a few minutes to let me know if there are any observable changes in your plants over the coming week I'd really appreciate it.

Have fun in Vic - we get the final go ahead on Monday for the Child care centre so it will be all systems go if the builders, plumbers, carpark makers butchers, bakers and candlestick makers all copoerate. Short of a miracle it looks like its going to be impossible to make it. So have fun - the birght shiny star rising just after dusk is Mercury.....

I will keep an eye on the pumkins and tommys for you. If the pumkins slow down, something is wrong as they are booming along.

Yes, mine are too - so I'm keen to watch this particular combination of influences which theoretically will affect stem viability and possibly bring on mould. Thanks Mantis.

In respect of tomatoes, I have oodles. But EB or foliage dieback in starting to take hold. A few plants have stopped growing and some are past their peak, but others in the Autumn patch and slow patch and frisky teenagers setting fruit. My best season ever, mainly because of no fruitfly :)))))) Or grubs or anything untoward. I think I am getting a handle on things. Sauce making next :) Planting out late is great.

Bugger! 20mm of rain in the last few hours and the tomatoes split like mad! Not happy!! :(

Thanks for the heads-up. Rain forecast tomorrow PM. I'll pick all that I can :)

Had an inordinate number of splitters this year despite no rain. Resigned to the fact it must be the humidity.

> 2 inches of rain in about 30 minutes at Marysville on Saturday afternoon. Absolutely torrential! No splitting as yet but have managed to return the driveway that shifted onto the road back to where it belongs. Have to do something about the drainage. Thank God it was this w/e and not next!!!
