Such good flowers for indoors too. They last for a couple of weeks in a vase. Great picture Jan.

Gorgeous blooms John. Do you find them easy to grow? I tried once but had no success.
Yes they certainly do make a great cut flower Tricia.
Cheers,
Dee.

Three or four years ago I started some following the directions on the Thompson and Morgan seed packet. I sowed in cell packs and kept them at 70 F for 5 weeks, then put in the refrigerator for 5 weeks, then took them out of the fridge. They sprouted fairly soon after that (I don't remember how long). I guess they were tricked into thinking they fell to earth in summer, went through a winter and it was now spring, and time to grow. I got a bunch of viable plants but lost a couple after transplanting. Now I'm doing another batch because I want to see if I can get some other colors. All of the plants that lived have sort of peachy-colored flowers--nice but I'd prefer more variety. This batch went into the fridge about a week ago. Last time I started them earlier in the year (right after Christmas, I think). I hope it will be alright to plant them in summer. I wouldn't expect to get any flowers till the following year anyway.

Alstroemerias sick?

Doesn't look pathogenic to me. Look more like cold damage or possibly chemical burn. And the yellowing leaves on last year's photos look more like mechanical damage or just aging than anything else. Not much affects alstroemerias.....a couple of root rots can be common but only if planted in poorly draining soils that become periodically water logged.

Alstroemeria Dying?

Relax. Nothing in the picture is dying. Plants don’t flower non stop and blooms fade. Dead head them and be patient. They’ll rebloom.

Indoor winter alstroemeria ?

Getgoing, yes, any color is welcome at this time of the year! I have several hibiscus that will bloom continuously, but these sit a bit neglected needing TLC. Diggerdee, my landscape is currently very white and bitterly COLD with the furnace running continuously, sigh! I did the farmers markets just a few times with veggies and some flowers, sure is a lot of intense prep work! Too bad you have a lack of sun at your place, it's the opposite here, I struggle to find placement for most things requiring shade. Katob, I find 'Inca Ice' has gained a bit of height to it, but yeah, those very short squatty varieties none ever jump into my shopping cart no matter how lovely the blooms might be! I should do the same and allow seed to develop and maybe get some bit of variance among seedlings. I've seen some very nice photos of Alstroemeria psittacina and hybrids that retain the tubular flower shape.

Well, well, I don't believe it. I haven't been on the Garden web for the past couple of years, moving, illness etc. However today a friend had a query so I said I would ask the experts on the garden web, hence I am here today, and lo and behold the first post I see is from my dear old friend Jan at Phillip Island with my favourite (next to roses) flower, and there is my reply to Jan's post in 2005 - at the top of the page. Fate or what? So 'hello' to everyone who knew me from the old days. Tricia
