mulberry cuttings

I have been trying to take some cuttings from a English Mulberry tree now for some years. At last I have three cuttings that struck last year and are just showing leaves again this spring. They are in pots,in quality potting mix.Could someone please advise as to how often to fertilize and with what.

Mulberries are pretty vigorous and need little or even no fertilizer at all as long as they are in good soil. Different story if it were in impoverished soil. Bit like figs I think... don't give them too much encouragement, but keep the soil moist of course.

My experience with mulberries (and figs) is that they will grow in any soil. Mine grow in beach sand, no water whatsoever and the thougher you treat them the sweeter the fruit. If you treat them kindly, water them and feed them they will grow too big to comfortably pick fruit. Both trees have the ability to send tap roots to the ground water so some gardeners put a concrete slab under their roots to make life a wee bit more difficult for them so the trees fruit sooner and don't grow that big. I will try to root them in my greenhouse along with the fig cuttings I root. I don't have a mulberry tree on which to graft them, and would hate to take a chance on grafting to a fig tree... I am not sure about mulberry , but usually with deciduous trees you take cuttings when the tree shed it's leaves and is dormant. I planted mulberry tree this year and it came grafted. I think that in order to get a strong tree you need the roots from one tree and the fruits from a different tree. If this is so, it's best to get one from the nursery. It will grow much faster. the one i got was a meter in height, and now just a few months after i planted it, it's over three meters.

Well, I can surely try...but not having a car, that won't be easy, since it's very far away. Either that or Ill try getting some cuttings from a similar morus nigra tree to one of mine - in leaves and fruits that I found in the most peculiar of places, one of the most populated and urbaniurbanized districts...which will be also good deed, since i dont know how long will it survive there:) So far only four of the cuttings are still alive...we will see how it progresses...I keep them in a warmer temperature room and away from sunshine, only spraying them with a water bottle not to lose the humidity under the domes. Someone told me that the most difficult time to start this was in autumn in comparison to spring, so im unlucky i guess:/ krnuttle, Nice memories you have there=) Mine were kinda the same , although i was an only child and used them more for climbing and hiding:) Thanks anyways for the answer.
