Plant more tomatoes now??

I am in Perth in a frost free area (near beach) and I am wondering whether I can plant some new tomato plants now or is it too late really? The nurseries are still selling punnets but that doesn't necessarily mean much does it!

My old bushes are getting lots of new growth too - will they fruit again? Many thanks.

Sally, take a look at the "Reviving tomatoes" thread just below this one. I am starting new seedlings at the moment for my greenhouse (unheated, at the moment). Its worth a try for sure.

For the old bushes, it depends on what type they are. Indeterminates for sure will try to set more fruit.

Sounds like you might be a little late - Remember as we move on in the year there will be less hours of sunlight which will result in less growth. Melons & tomatoes love heat too. Maybe If you start them today and are prepared to add a cheapo low tunnel in September you just might make it. The low tunnel will retain heat and create a growth promoting/extending micro-climate. Give it a try- love to hear how it turns out.

I have tomatoes on a trellis almost up to the roof. They were planted from seed last fall. Yesterday I saw little tiny worms on them so I am trying spraying with lemon dish soap - Just a little smig in a spray container with water. I am going to try and see how long I can keep them going. They look so pretty on the trellis. I have tomatoes in another garden (from saved seed again) that are doing fine so far. However the watermelon and cantalope near them have what looks like aphids. I am spraying the aphids with neem and lemon soap mixed. Spraying is a pain because those bugs are smart and stay on the under side of the leaves so they are hard to get to. My stuff has so many leaves that I really can't get all of them. My past experience with this organic spraying is that you have to keep doing it every few days because even if you get all the bugs (which I don't) more will hatch. And of course I pick off the leaves that are really infected. But I overcame bugs earlier with my potatoes and strawberries this way so I am hoping.

Depends on if you want to do some protection covering or not. Late fall we get a few cold nights but many warm days in between so it works for me with just a little extra work. And any greens left on the vines come hard freeze time I just pull up the whole plant and hang it upside down in the greenhouse or basement. They go right ahead and ripen. We have had ripe tomatoes on Thanksgiving that way. You lose nothing by trying. ;) Dave

Hey everybody just checking in with a few pictures of the latest tomatoes. I also have about 5 other purple varieties, Fred Limbaugh's Potato Top, Ponderosa Red, Tim's Black Truffles, Anna Russian, Black Jade, Black from Tula, Pineapple, Pink Pioneer, Dr. Lyle, Stump of the World, and Burpee's Delicious. It is supposed to get down to 36 this next week, so I will have to move a bunch inside-sure wish they would start to turn or at least blush. I have gotten about 200 cherry tomatoes from Tiny Tim, SS100, Sun Gold, and Sweet Million and the Sweet Million are by far the best tasting one. I haven't gotten any larger tomatoes (4 oz or better) that have ripened yet. I have had a few fried green tomatoes from the Tycoon and they have a really good flavor for green tomatoes-hope to try a ripe one soon. How is everybody's winter tomatoes doing?

I have a lot of ressurections in my patch. The Purple calabash, Burpees Quarter Century and another one are full of fruit again.

Good for you Adam. I am trying a few but leaf desease seems to be killing the idea off. I sprayed with a copper fungicide today (first time for the season) to try to get them up and running. Apart from that I have cuttings and new seedlings on the way in the GH. Russian Red cutting is flowering and looking good.

I've got Anna Russian back from the fungal dead with plenty of flowers and a couple of very nice fruit on the way. Ditto Marianna's Peace, Jaune FlammÃ©e and Golden Queen. Most remarkable of all is the B'wine OTV that's been in the ground since last August. It's reborn with a heap of flowers. The worst stretch of fungal disease in my memory seems to have passed. The humidity must be dropping.

Glad to hear that things are picking up again in Sydney! Hope you'll have a great Autumn crop. :)

I've still got tons of green tomatoes on the plants. I don't think they'll all be able to ripen up before the cold weather hits. But I'm not complaining, I've had a pretty good run considering this summer was the coldest since 2002.

The only regret so far - I should have bagged the very first flowers of the plants. I might not be able to save as many seeds as I would have liked.

Hmmm, Spatz I'm not familiar with SA seasons but if it's anything like here I don't think summer is over with yet.

March can often be the hottest month of all. We have a bit of mild weather (like now) and I start planting because it looks like autumn has arrived and then bang! we get the sting in the tail...

Spatz, you should still bag for seeds you want to save. The fruit doesn't have to be ripe for seed-saving purposes. As long as it has (at least) turned from dark green to light green.
