Silver Trumpet Tree

I bought a tabebuia argentea for next to nothing as it was looking a bit beaten up. I repotted it, thought it had died over winter when all the leaves dropped off and the bark went spongey. I didn't want to throw it away - just in case. Now, come spring it has shoooted like the bejesus and looks great.

Does anyone have any links/info on its care? I've had a bit of a look but didn't find much.

Hi... there is no special care needed just treat it like any other tree, but they do like a rich moist soil and a sunny spot. I grew the pink one when I lived in Townsville and I remembered it did not flower till it was about five years old but well worth the wait. And the reason it lost it leaves was because it is deciduous and sheds its leaves every year to make way for those beautiful flowers it grows 5-8 mts tall, I would get it planted into the ground before it gets too hot. Thanks for the advice. I got it in the ground at the weekend. I have a couple of hundred plants in pots (was living in a rental) and now I can start building my garden proper. Feels good.
How often would you water? Let the soil dry out finger deep and then soak?

The parts left in the trees will die as long as no piece left connecting them to the soil. The exception might be if the vines have managed to actually root up in the canopy in pockets of debris. For English Ivy it is a good idea to cut the stems twice a few inches apart so there is a big gap which the vine cannot regrow across. It might be sensible to do the same with trumpet vine (I am assuming this is Campsis radicans.) But the cut off base of the plants will regrow and it will continue to put up suckers.

I LOVE Royal Poincianas!!! The place where the Golden Trumpet was is too small for a Poinciana, but if the Silver Maple ever takes a dive I want to put in a Poinciana tree! We dont have any backyard trees b/c we have overhead power lines and an underground large drainage concrete piping at the end of the yard, right where a tree would be perfect (and still keep a large part of the yard open). I did not want a tree right in the middle of the back yard, but now that Max is older and does not just run wild in circles in the yard I might think about putting in a tree and Royal Poinciana is at the very top of the list, that wide canopy is great for shade, they do flower twice a year here! Tampa does not have nearly as many as South Florida, but we do have some and they seems to do well. I there is a house a couple blocks away that has a Glory Tree and OMG it is beautiful, maybe I could find one. Another tree that seems to be much more common down south. OMG, all this flowering tree talk makes me want to buy a new house!!!! I need a bigger yard, I need more trees!!!

“I know how to handle invasive ones.” Ummm. . . Have you read any of the threads about trumpet vines on this forum? It isn’t just a matter of pruning, though you will need to do a lot of that. You will also need to control underground spread as well, and it will just laugh at your sidewalk as far as being a barrier and head for the lawn via underground suckers, easily popping up several feet away. Judging from the color, this may be one of the slightly less aggressive selections, but read about some other folks’ trumpet vines and be forewarned. I am another person who advises that insects are an important part of nature and your garden. If you don’t like them being so close to the house, move the plant further away so that you can enjoy the flowers without seeing the various insects. Beware that fly glue traps can snare the hummingbirds, so please get rid of those. As floral suggested, you can put a band of sticky material around the trunk to keep the ants off, and spraying the plants down with water will remove aphids that they may be attracted to. Your stinky trap may well be attracting additional flies to the area.

Good luck with your garden, thats a big job to look forward too, we did the same thing while building our house. And it sure does feel good to be doing it on your own piece of turf.
About the watering you would be the better judge of that, if you water too much they get lots of top hairy roots and if you dont water enough they get stressed all depends on the type of soil you have but just do what you think best. And have lots of fun planing and planting that new garden. .Cheers..MM.

Some advice on T. argentea - they can be very susceptible to wind throw. Try planting in a sheletered spot or else once it reaches 2 metres or so cut it right back to about 50cms of the groud - trust me it will come back better than ever but will develop a much sturdier root system.

I am thinking of putting in a Silver Trumpet tree. We are building a new home in Homosassa and I am designing the landscape. It will be on the south side of the house about 18 ft from my office window. Can anyone tell me of any problems I may have with this tree and is it too close to the house. Am wondering about Hurricanes..am new to Florida.
