chilli Leaves falling off

let me start off by saying i doint know much about chilli at all.

I planted a chilli plant; it was doing well, flowered produced and flowered again. Now all the leaves have all shrivelled up (from the outside in) and are all falling off, leaving a rather bare and sad looking plant.

ItÂs been fed and looked after. It did have some black spots on the leaves a while ago.

Any ideas? or am i trying to keep alive an annual plant?

Can't help with the problem but chillis are perennials, in a warm climate that is, so that's not it.

A few possibles:

THRIPS. They suck the sap. The infested leaves develop crinkles and curl upwards.

VIRUS: Susceptible to Mosaic Virus which can occur in land previously planted with either potatoes or tomatoes.

RED SPIDER MITE: First mottling on the upper leaves, which eventually turn bronze and fall off.

Organic soloution is to use unperfumed soapy water liberally onto your chilli plants every 14 to 20 days ( life cycle of thrips and mites.

I'd take no chances if you think its Virus because you are going to infect other plants such as strawberries, tomatoes and capsicums. Get fresh seeds or plants and dig in plenty of manure and some Neem before planting.

It is normal. I actually cut all the bottom leaves that touch the ground soon enough after transplanting, when new grows started and bottom leaves start to turn yellow. They do not get enough sun when new leaves open up, so plant stop feeding them. And as soon as you cut them plant starts grow more new leaves.

Peat moss & Perlite are not what this plant needs. Peat is a KNOWN problem. Pls read further on what this plant needs before re-potting. For one, you're missing a SOIL component. Why do you want to repot this? Sorry, but I think you're in way over your head & you'll regret repotting it w/ such incomplete info. I think you're really overreacting, it doesn't look dying AT ALL in my opinion. Checking for moisture just 2 inches down doesn't tell you conditions at bottom of pot. Pls search this site for watering using a 'tell'. Pls. allow time for others to respond.

swamoch, I think a smaller pot with better soil will make a big difference. It was a shame you lost the one stem. The leaves may root but will never make a plant. While rhizomatous begonia leaves can make a new plant, canes cannot - just the way nature plays with our minds. It's been tried a thousand times by almost everybody and the ABS even funded a university study to see if they could find the miracle for rooting canes using only leaves but after trying many methods, they gave up too. Maybe micro-culture can do it? I use only Miracle-Gro for the last 12 years or so for everything. I gave up mixing my own after 20 years or so, but you can make your own mix and see if you can come off with a better mix than mixes already made at your disposal. I used to buy the big bags but with age, I have started buying the half size bags for easier carrying. Costs a little more but worth the lighter weight. I used to buy many bags (7 to 10 at the beginning of the growing season but might have one or two left at the end of the season which seemed to be wasteful so now I only buy two at a time and pick up more as I need it) Same thing for garden soil - useful for starting seeds.
