Michelia alba can waft more than a block to my nose when I'm in the vicinity of one. I usually get a better quality fragrance at night. Brugmansia is wonderful in the evenings as well. Their scents aren't unique to evenings, but I mostly notice Dianthus superbus and Dianthus arenarius at night. Their scents are quite different from the clovey fragrance of many carnations. They're almost soapy with a delicious light hard to describe quality. I have some in containers by the door. Jasmine of all sorts is great. The sambac scent probably appeals most to my nose. Citrus is blooming and smells heavenly right now. A few plants that always waft some fragrance for me would be Tagetes lemonii (Mexican marigold) and 'Allen Chickering' Salvia. No matter what time of day, I can smell them when I'm near them. Jay

I grew both of these plants when I lived in Seattle, they did famously. It's hard to tell the difference between them from the leaves, but once they bloom there is no doubt. (As this is an old letter, you probably know by now!) Actually, I may be the one responsible for N. mutabilis entering horticulture; a grad student at the UW was doing chromosomal work on as many different species of Nicotiana as she could, and they were growing them in the greenhouse there. I drooled at N. mutabilis, begged seed, and gave it all over the place. The next year I saw it mentioned as a new plant in an English article, which said it was shared by Steven Antonow, a friend in Seattle who got it from me. :) It is beautiful but in good soil it's rather hulking, and unfortunately it is not fragrant. BUT - if you cross it with N. alata, you get a wonderful plant, taller than N. alata and with bigger flowers than either. They display all the changing color of N. mutabilis *and* they are fragrant, though not quite as powerfully so as N. alata in its pure form. I'd give my eye teeth to grow that thing again. Georgia. You replaced my first Ruby Glo when it died. Then IT died. I took a shot on that White 'Nigrillia',spelled something like that, and the price went though the roof,and I ended up with it. All your plants arrive in great shape. BUT all of mine have died. It's just that simple. I pot them into 3in pots with top quality soil, and within a week,or less, they are dead. I never would have thought to ask you for a replacement for the white one or a second one for the Ruby Glo. I would give anything to have another chance at another Ruby Glo or that White one. But I never would have asked for a replacement again. Sellers on EBay have such short nerves when you say something they sold you 'didn't live' or 'wasn't what you expected'. From past experiences with OTHER sellers, NOT you. I just imagined the email I'd get back IF I asked you for a replacement again,or for the white one.. So I never asked. Past experiences told me not to ask. NOT my experience with YOU. YOU offered and sent the 1 Ruby Glo replacement. I NEVER would have asked for a second one, let alone a replacement for that White one. THAT one cost so much I wouldn't even think of a replacement. BTW....This is Stan in Ft.Laud Fla.
