I had never heard of this plant but a little research suggests it is coccinia grandis, or ivy gourd - a rampant weed in the warmer or tropical regions, especially in the U.S. and to some extent Western Australia as well as central Africa and Asia. Seems it is edible and used in soups. I doubt you would have much luck growing it in Victoria on account of the cool winters. I've copied a link that may be of interest to you.
