Hellooooooooooooooooo (yells out towards the back of the garden)

Rosellas, I am not having much luck with these beautiful fruit plants. If I put them in full sun they burn like there is no tomoro/ What do they like? Sun? Part shade? I need someone who is an accomplished grower at these bloody thing to help me and tell me what to do. What soils,fruiting periods and times etc etc. I live in SE QLD.

Hi belladonna12 I had the best luck with rosellas under a giant fishtail palm and between the house and a fence where they got about 4 hours of direct sunlight. they were planted in well mulched sand (the block was mostly sand and clay before I brought in some large round bales of sugarcane mulch).

the ones under the palm were "planted" in about 2' of sugar cane mulch with just the rootballs from the pot they were in.

They thrived and produced heaps of rosellas before the grasshoppers finished them off.

I'm in SEQ too.

My mother used to grow them in Caboolture in full sun and never had a problem and she neglected them a bit. If they're burning, try planting where they have shelter from the midday sun.

Thanks to both of you. Collie - that is exactly what I needed to hear. It (maybe) wasn't something I did to it to cause it to grow so small. Honnat - thanks also for the reply. I grow close to 100 dahlias now and have ordered from maybe 8-10 different AMERICAN vendors over the years. In all honesty, many of them have never sprouted or bloomed (maybe 25%) so I don't see USA growers being that much better. More accurate yes but not necessarily fool-proof bloomers. And the reason I even fall for the box store varieties is because you can plant them right now! As it is, unless I want to pay extra, the 15 tubers i ordered this year won't arrive until early to mid April and some of my dahlias start blooming in May, so I hate to plant in late April or even early May. Hence, the box stores blues!

I've seen the odd magpie in my garden just lying spread eagled on the dirt; wing's out, head on the dusty soil. Saw one again yesterday not more than 3 metres from me while I was working away spreading sugar cane mulch. Except for it's body movement as it breathed I'd've thought it dead or dying. I wandered off for something or other and when I came back it'd gone. As it was in the full afternoon sun I dismissed the thought it was cooling itself. Mind you, from years of simply ignoring them except for chucking them the odd curl grub I dig up, they've become use to me. Maybe it was having a dust bath, might help get rid of what bugs that might plague them.

No, it was developed in Kilmore by someone who simply couldn't keep the possums off, and is electronic and squits a three second jet of water. Apparently enormously effective, although you need to turn it off when you are working on the roses if you don't want to get squirted. Doesn't hurt the roses as three seconds of water is harmless.

I grew them the past couple of years in Murrumba Downs (SEQ). They grew in my vege garden (so, well composted soil) and in full sun. Fantastic crop! (I did cover with shade cloth while they were little though.) Daniel
