Combretum/Povrea

I spotted this in flower at a farmers' market in Murwillumbah in 2010 and planted it to grow over my new garden arch out front - it's a climber. Not happy where it was, I moved it to another arch down the back and planted other things around it and forgot about it. This spring (3 years later) at the top of the arch I spotted these brilliant flower; it had secretly climbed though the foliage of other things I have there. The label I put with it at the time records it as Povrea coccinea, but an internet search suggests it belongs to the Combretum family and is in fact C. coccineum, a native of Madagascar. Seems it's fairly rare but I was just wondering if anyone else has it and has done any research on it.

    Very interesting Bill as well as attractive the little stamens are Grevillae like and the name sounds like a nickname for a Belgian detective!! We had some rain last night and only hope it moves to N.S.W where these horrific fires are at this moment. Our hearts go out to all who are suffering so much and pray for the safety of our heroic fire fighters

    Thanks Chas and Inga. Fortunately for me the fires are a long way away but the news broadcasts indicate there's a real conflagration in the blue Mountains west of Sydney. Fires are merging, many homes have already been destroyed and many more are under threat; it's been such a dry winter and the winds this spring are severe. We can only pray for rain.
