A friend of mine in Stawell in Victoria has told of horror bushfires in between her and Horsham. Could everyone put a thought out for Ozmantis. He must be close to them. I've lost a house to bushfires. They really are terrible. Let's hope he's okay.

Yes it is a terrible time of the year for these things to happen............ So sorry to hear of your loss also.............. And I too hope Ozmantis and his property are OK...........Cheers..MM.

We are all fine thanks Adam and MM. The fires were about 30 km from Horsham. We have no bush around Horsham only wheat farming planes. Grass fires are a worry in the dry stubbles but Horsham itself would never be in any trouble I dont think. Stawell on the other hand is surrounded by bushland so they would have had a worrying time. The last count was 11 homes lost. Mantis

This is nothing. You should see how things grow in north Queensland. Sickening. I was going to post pics of a mutilated pubicalyx i spotted on my lunch time run. It was just too sad. I couldn't even salvage anything from it.

Bill, very practical question but is timber always usable after fire like that? Even if the inside doesn't burn to the point of ash, could the structure of the wood be weakened by the intense heat? thanks Shax, when I posted my reply I hadn't clicked thru to see where in AU that was. Looks like some recovery is going on in your area, but the pine plantation was in the area of "snow gums". Adam, wonderful photos. These Teas are so resilient! I don't have one eaten by a gopher yet thankfully. It may be because they are not planted by my South fence, but I am not sure. Maybe gophers prefer certain varieties or root types. Are there gophers in Australia?

Lucky you're okay. Don't think me a worry wart. We lost our home in '62, and my sister lost hers again in '83. Shocking stuff.
