I haven't tried the winter sow method, will go read up on it. I did try something last year with an annual that is reputed to be a self sower. I planted Buplereum on top of the tulip bulbs. I had ordered a large package, and wanted to know what the seedlings would look like when I planted them in the spring so I wouldn't pull them as weeds. They came up, and made a neat little row, at the front of the bed. Stayed small until the snow covered them. MA, north of Boston and we did have some snow last year, not the bumper crop of 2 years ago, but ground as well covered Dec to Mar. When the snow melted, there was that neat row of tiny Buplereum, just happy as anything among the tulips! They grew well, and put out blooms at least a month before the other seeds I planted in the correct time, in full sun. So I am collecting seed, from that fall sown group, and going to try it again this year. I ordered the Delphinium x belledonna in August as an experiment in this direction. So I have put half the seed into the frig in a wet paper towel in plastic bag, and the other half in the package dry. Will check the wet towel in a couple 5 days, and plant either in 2 weeks, or when I see action. I'll post when I have info Oh and Keelo (the dog) doesn't chew on things that don't run away, like snakes, chipmunk, voles, bees, and the occasional grasshopper.

I have the plain pink variety of Epilobium/Chamerion and rather like it. I've had it for seven years or longer now. It does spread by runners, but I've found it reasonably easy to yank out the ones I don't want in the early spring as I see them encroaching on other plants. I will admit, the runners can sometimes stretch out pretty far and pop up inconveniently close or even in another neighboring plant. If you have space to let it roam all the better. It tends to look better in a "wild/natural" type garden imo. I've seen more running than seeding here, though that could be because my beds are crowded a bit. I try to trim them down before they set seed anyhow- they are a nightmare to cut down while they are seeding. I did that one year and was covered in the small fuzzy seeds! Even managed to inhale some, LOL. CMK

No, it's not too late. I started my first batch ever in a McD's salad tray about mid-May or so, drained and covered on the north side of the house. Had them in the fridge but somebody on the peren forum told me to just set them outside. As soon as they started germinating in 2 weeks or less, I took the covers off and kept misted. Had good germ for me. I xplanted quite young into 6 packs and grew them on until almost fall because of the crazy hard rains we were having. Have only about 5-7 left doing well out in the garden from those but lost many along the way, couple weaker ones, hope they take off. My winter-sown delphis this winter, pretty good germination of the ones from Swallowtail. The others, I have only two of the most expensive kind from T&M, sowed in deep cells, 1 seed per cell. The ones that have germinated better are in plastic cups. Incidentally, most of my WS successes this year, many, many no shows yet, seemed to have toughened up and withstand watering with a regular sprinkling can except a couple individual seedlings that were a little leggy. So I won't worry overmuch about rain this spring. Everything is uncovered except the jugs which are untaped and seem to be well enough vented to make it through some high 70's and afternoon shade. I am having to watch more closely for drying out, have found most are tough enough I can water with regular sprinkling can at this point. Too many jugs out there to drag the hose around and through yet or I'd use that.
