Thyme...those are beautiful. But the thought if their having a pungent odor will keep me from planting a more manageable wisteria. We have decided to go with tree form...only because my husband said...if I have patience with bonsai...surely I can manage a wisteria tree. My bonsai wisteria is no trouble at all...and it's basically miniature form. I do though...see quite a handful if I go with the vine tree form that is meant to climb something. For it was twisted and needs support to stand upright. Which I had contemplated our gazebo. Reading the link that was attached I did see where the tree was mentioned to be more manageable by a few posters. When it is upright and not allowed to climb over something. For a second...I thought I had a winner...with zone 5 and a manageable vine. Until I read it is quite unpleasant to smell. And it is to close to outdoor living spaces. I appreciate the heads up though on that.

THX...That sounds like good advice...my neighbor had said he had a suckling come up in his garden about 4 feet from my brick wall...he said he pulled it out but could not get all the root and it looked like it was growing in my direction...actually 2 plants had come up and the smaller one I just yanked out and stuck in a pot....it took a while but it is growing fast now...it's a third of the sz of the bigger one...but you are right...it most likely is from the root stock which would not be desirable...I just started to read-up on wisterias and had no idea they were grafted as they are...so this is a bit disappointing cuz it has been great having something grow so fast and high in the garden...my dad had a wisteria tree in his yard that I loved and I was looking forward to having one like his....looks like I will have to spend the money to get a good one...just out of curiosity I might let it grow another summer...will let you know what it does...I am quite sure it is wisteria...the smaller one I potted is behaving much more like a vine and looks like pictures I see online...I love volunteer plants...this one is amazing with the growth it has shown...it could be a good experimental project for me...with all the vigor it has I could try to sculpt it and make it grow into an interesting form...

Moving this thread down with some more pictures from today: Looking up from weeding nearby (The scent is heavenly...) With a tree peony in the foreground: I prefer how it looks once the leaves start appearing - within a day or two of it starting to flower.

Woody , I know I am super late to this thread , but I remember your wisteria from the cottage garden postings , and I believe you also had new dawn on running chains and a arbor ? (Maybe ? Lol ) Anyway I find it fascinating that you have been able to control it so well . Sorry about no blooms this year , next year will be better ! How often do you have to prune ? I would love to try one myself but it looks like the bugger could get out of hand if you turned your back ! :)
