Hypericum var. henryi

14 years ago

{{gwi:2113744}}

My hypericum henryi is coming into flower. It's a bush about a metre and a half tall by a metre wide, and is magnificent in full bloom. Just thought I paste a photo for whoever happens to wander by this gallery.

Regards

Love the photo. How about posting the whole bush?

Oh, ok, at the moment I haven't got a photo of the whole bush and it's now dark outside. What about if I wait until it's in full bloom? Yeah, I'll do it then. Should be no more than a week or so.

Fantastic list of seeds! I think it is just great that you have focused your life on nature at such a young age. I too would love to have 10 (maybe 5) acres someday to plant a wonderland of natives plants, and am already doing that on 1.25 acres. Difference is, my interest didn't come into sharp focus until age 45. :) There are quite a few seeds on this list I am interested in, and I checked your want list and I have a few on that list. Maybe we can do a trade this fall? Just a note - on your want list is Cynanchum louiseae - this is an extremely invasive non-native vine that is becoming a serious problem in the Northeast US. And it has the additional problem that Monarch butterflies will "sense" it is in the Milkweed family, lay eggs on it, and then it will kill the caterpillars because it is toxic to Monarch larvae.

Be very wary of the Hypericum: you may find it to have weedy tendencies under the hot/dry climate. Lachenalia - need winter rain and summer dry. If that matches your environment, then you'll probably do well with them. The rue is a good possible. For many of those you've listed - they'll survive the heat but the groundwater will be the limiting factor - and whatever shade you can provide. If you have a septic tank system with a leachfield, or a greywater disposal system, you may well be able to enjoy many of these.

Brandon - I hesitate to post a reply because I may be leaving out something that would be really interesting since I am not familiar with most of these. But here goes - Agastache 'Golden Jubilee' Aristolochia fimbriata - Variegated Dutchman's Pipe I'm sure the milkweeds would be wonderful, I just don't know which ones :-( Caryopteris x clandonensis 'Blue Mist' - Blue Mist Spirea Clerodendron ugandense - Blue Glory Bower Ceratotheca triloba - Lavender South African Foxglove Hydrangea quercifolia - Oakleaf Hydrangea Papaver - mixed Poppies (mostly orange, red, and pink) Penstemon x mexicali 'Red Rocks' - Red Rocks Beardtongue Hope you'll be bringing at least some of this list!!! Thanks, Frances

Hypericum is not my favourite plant but your photo of it is superb--those stamens look spectacular!
I meant to leave only a comment but the window is giving me an option to post a photo, and I can't pass up the chance to do so. Even though the plant is *completely* unrelated to the hypericum, not even the same colour LOL Here it is anyway, a native hibiscus called 'Barambah Creek'. One of the few (that I have anyway) without prickly stems and leaves; in fact, the leaves are soft and downy.

Lovely hibiscus cestrum, the leaves remind me of another plant a bit, can't recall it's name though.
