Heliconia plants

I have a large range of heliconias, gingers and costus plants to swap or sell. I have a large shadehouse with hundreds potted up. I live on the Sunshine Coast and have 50 or 60 varieties of the above. If you have any unusual varieties of heliconias I would be very keen to trade these for some of my rare ones.

You can contact me at skyfox@iprimus.com.au or ring me on 54411708.

Hi,
I've grown interest in growing Heliconia ever since I went to Singapore Botanic Garden. Heliconias are abundant over there and they grow so well that even some of them cracked and grow on the cemented pathway. back in Indonesia, I used to think of them as potential weed, due to how quick they grew and nearly overtake the whole garden in a year (worse if I give them fertilizer). So, I undervalue them and threw all of them away.

Now, I live in Melbourne, the winter temperature here can get to -1 to -2C in the morning with occasional very light frost, around 8 - 10C during midday. I read through the garden forum, people talk about schideana, subulata, angusta, spissa etc as being cold hardy. But, I wonder how cold they can survive to? will they still flower after exposure to -1C?

I have been searching for answer from different sources. however, it seems every areas and ones own experience are different. So, I've decided to experiment it myself. I grow heliconia rostrata and subulata outside in the pot at the moment. there was just a light frost here yesterday. The subulata has not shown damage yet, but the rostrata has shown a slight frost burnt around the edges of the leaves. Should I worry about this?
I wonder if anyone has experience growing Heliconia in temperate zone (in melbourne) succesfully?

I'm going to put subulata, rostrata, bihai 'nappi' and angusta 'red christmas' into the ground in my garden once the winter pass. So, I will need advice how to look after them.

Can anyone tell if heliconia caribaea x bihai 'kawauchi' will likely to survive melbourne weather?

Even in Venice Beach the Alpinia purpurata is not winter hardy, and won't even like the typical night time temps in summer. This one is a true ultra tropical that only blooms in California if greenhouse grown. Near the beach, as you are, I would think that Hedychium gardnerianum is likely to do very well in full sun as long as it gets good year round water, especially in hot spells. The viviperous Ginger you have is probably Hedychium greenei, which is orange red in bloom and does create new offsets from the old flower stalks, and is not fragrant. I don't know what that particular Heliconia species will want in your location, as it is a species that isn't hardy enough to grow here in the SF Bay Area. I have seen this growing in full sun in the tropics, so I think it would do okay with full morning sun or dappled sun. It will want your warmest most protected conditions to get through winter, and may need to be grown as a container plant and given protection in winter to get it to actually bloom. The more heat you can give it in the growing season, the more likely you are to see it bloom.

Fawnridge, I love crotons. I have a few, none rare I don't think. I like pink tones, and especially like a small Croton 'Piecrust' I picked up last season at USF. Jupiterplants, I know what you mean about the Sealing Wax palm. I currently have 4 of them. They are growing well. I killed my first one that I had several years ago by planting it too close to the sliding door of the greenhouse, where there was unfortunately a draft. It got a bit chilled and bit the dust. I made certain to plant the new ones (I was really, REALLY lucky and got them for only $10 each when I made a larger order from Hawaii, otherwise I wouldn't have so many)pretty far into the much warmer interior of the GH. I really like palms and am a sucker for the smaller growing understory palms that have new red leaves. This is one of my favorites, Calyptrocalyx pachystachis I am also a sucker for the "finger like" Anthuriums. I bought this Anthurium polydactylon off of eBay 2 years ago as a smallish plant, and finally trained it up a totem. I habe been growing the Costus "Maroon Chalice" for years and love the bright red architectural look of its stems. I discovered by trial and error that the Costus "Green Chalice" is actually root hardy here and comes back, but the Maroon Chalice doesn't. So I keep a goodly patch going in the GH thank you to everyone who has replied so far. I'd like to see pics of your stuff!

It also looks like mites to me, check the leaves for very fine webbing and tap a leaf onto a white piece of paper, if minute little specks fall off and move you have mites. The kind of light streaky pattern on that one leaf looks suspicious. Its good to cover all bases though as Bill suggested and use a good fungicide and pesticide.
