Ground cover

Can anyone suggest a good groundcover for rugosa hybrids? I used nepeta but it got completely out of hand and covered the whole bed. Well, I did put quite a few in to begin with. I find it's too low for me to be bending down trying to cut off those awful old bits. Now I've dug the lot out, although I know there'll be heaps that keep coming back but I'm not going to let it get away again. At least it kept the weeds down - there was just no room for weeds. Meanwhile I'd like a wellmannered ground cover that will spread a little, but keep to itself, look attractive, not be promiscuous and not require regular pruning. Too much to ask?

Hi maddy58, I have had no experience with ground covers.
Just infront of my house where it gets sun and then latter shade, the violias and pansies have made a bit of ground cover of blue etc between the roses and a few other bulbs and perenials. They just keep reseeding. That is all I have to offer. I will be interested what other people suggest.

I guess the violas could be one way to go. They certainly seed freely and are quite easy to pull out when they've worn out their welcome.

If you live in New York as suggested in your name, you might want to search on cliffandjoann. They built a stunningly beautiful pond and have explained the details. They say that some of their plants are in pots. I use impatiens and am under the impression that they will grow without much actual soil. It is certainly true for water cress (from the grocery store) anchored directly in flowing water. For something larger, sweet flag will certainly work. You can also use vines or other plants growing beside or near the area. You can also add logs or other natural materials for interest and coverage.

Reb, it might be a bit tall, but it is wichuraiana hybrid, which means it can *cover* a lot of ground, lol. It tends to root wherever it touches the ground. I have a friend who made the mistake of planting three in an area about 10'x20' behind his garage. He had to remove two (not to mention several new plants that had rooted), and move the third to the middle of the bed. Within two or three years after a brutal pruning (for the move), the one had nearly filled the bed again. I don't know which version he has, whether it's Gouse or Grouse Immensee. My friend's plant(s) were a fairly uniform 2' or so.

Sedges have edges. If if is Penn sedge (Carex Pennsylvanica) it will have edges more noticeable than grass. That said, my bet if you email the university, they will tell you.

Will mulch prevent ground covers from spreading?

I doubt it will stop either the Sempervivums or the weeds. Nothing much suppresses weeds in open soil except weeding.
