Help!

Hi All. I'm in trouble. Had a really busy year. Part-time work and study unexpectedly became Full-time work and study. To cheer myself up (you guys will understand) I recklessly picked up the phone whilst browsing the online catalogues and ordered roses for an area that needs work. Treloar and The Rose Garden are way too organised. Friday I came home to find a large box. EEEEK!!. I've got nutgrass to poison, soil to improve and healing them in isn't a great option. Can I heel them into some large pots for about a month? Or is that a stupid idea?

Any advice will be greatly received.

I am not an expert but I would say it is a great idea. I did that with many of mine last year. They did not really start to do much till planted out but they survived.

I bought heaps and potted them up last winter, because I knew i wouldn't be able to plant them out until nearly Christmas, so they were in pots for 6 months. They all did well except for Falstaff, which is now coming along OK. Considering that they got very little attention from me, and only the occasional watering - I think they coped very well. I used garden soil, mixed with a little potting mix. The garden soil here is heavy clay loam which roses like.

I agree what a beautiful kitchen.. I think Jeanne is right, a Black Wire Basket.. would look good. You could use a really large sized one up there and propped up (I've used wood blocks that are not seen) to elevate the basket and give it more height. It's kind of lost up there. I've even taken a basket and tilted it forward (propped up from the back) to bring it's contents into view. I think what Punk means is to move the Prints down to the other side - left of the basket and put them together...JMO I'd love to see the end results.. The rug should be big enough to slip under the front 1/3 - 1/2 of the sectional and extend past the right and left ends of it by a foot or more. Use blue painter's tape on the floor to tape that out, then measure and buy a rug in the closest size to what your taped rug measures.

Firstly, thanks for your response. We were watering every other day for the first 5 weeks. Just with the hose on the sprinkler setting for about 5 mins per tree. We did not hydrate the root ball. We followed the planting instructions that came with the trees. We dug the hole 3x the width of the root ball, placed the root ball into the hole, just slightly higher than ground level to allow for run off, and then back filled with the soil, trying to remove air pockets as we went. I should also add that we fertilised with evergreen fertiliser sticks about 5 weeks after planting (in April). We put the sticks about 5 feet from the trunk. They have been planted for 10-11 weeks now and this has begun in the last 2 weeks.

I sprayed as per the label. The plant was taken outside and sprayed. It was dried out there and then bought back in. I don't think the leaf's are burnt ... but then again, i don't know whats going on here. When i first got the plant there were scales on it, and then the soil itself have some kind of centipedes or something. so as this plant was kept inside - i covered the top layer of the soil with food grade diatomaceous earth. (which is the bag you see in the back, in the first picture.) The plant was fine for 3 weeks that i had it and i had not watered it during that time as i was waiting to get it treated first. After i treated the plant, and it dried - i watered the soil (only the soil - not the leaf). i let the water flow through the soil. and then 1 week later - the first leaf dropped! its been 4 weeks and we lost 4 leaves! There was a lot of changes - with the water and insecticide treatment . this could have been stressful for the plant. after 2 weeks i flushed the soil again to make sure the water cleared out all the salts in soil or any thing that was blocking the soil. I have not fertilized the plant yet. im waiting for the plant to stabilize before i fertilize the plant.

I have bought 6 so far & they are all potted up till the frost has gone they will be fine I'm sure

Yes you can. In fact, if you are really pushed for time, soak them in a bucket of water with a bit of seasol added. Not only can you leave roses like this for weeks, (at this time of the year), but you don't have to worry about watering them.

I did succumb to 6 DA's a week ago (in addition to my nursery orders) and have no idea where they are going - so got a styrofoam box and put holes in it, some coarse sand and some compost and put in the 6 bare roots where I hope they will survive until I work out where to put them .....

A nasty virus has laid me low and the fridge door broke. They are still in water but I am gradually putting them in pots.
