Great link, lemonhead, so interesting to see the personalities of each library. If I'd had to match names to rooms I could never have done it. I loved Rod Stewart's library -- very cozy and the closest to my own taste.

Rod Stewart for me, too, Sheriz6. In fact, when I bragged last year about the bookcases my husband built for me, they are like those except floor to ceiling open shelves and only on one wall. Nevertheless, they make me smile when I look at them. His coffee table would give me the fidgits.

Funny you should mention Beatrix Farrand. I just got back from a few days in Bar Harbor ME. I visited Farrand's last house and garden, Garland Farm, which has just been bought by a group which wants to restore both. They are quite small so the project is very doable. The group is led by the wonderful landscape architect, Patrick Chasse, and is well worth any dollar or two you might spare. After years of reading about Beatrix Farrand, I do not believe she dismantled her family's place, Reef Point, garden, house and all, because she couldn't leave an endowment. It's too long a story for here but I think she felt a lot of anger about some important life experiences and that is the source of some of the curious things she did. We were told at Garland Farm that her will stated that, if her caretaking couple predeceased her, Garland Farm was to be dismantled. Fortunately, they outlived her. I am still mulling over my own answer to the question posed by this thread. Initially, I must say that I think I could never live within the bounds of someone else's vision. Much as I would be tempted, I don't think I could buy a garden which demanded restoration. Stay tuned for what someone else actually did when presented with this dilemma.

Ellen, I don't know about the library, I know the schools within the intermediate school district and the county government gets internet connections through the local tech school at no charge. I'm only assuming that the libraries do too. Other customers are charged a monthly rate, so I'm guessing they make enough from other services to cover the free connections for non-profits but I don't know where the tech school gets their funds. Michigan is still leading the U.S. in unemployment and in jobs lost and we're still losing them. Statewide unemployment is over 14% but our area is hovering between 20 and 24%. We've always had much lower wages and higher unemployment than other areas but we were traditionally a "bedroom" community for bigger places like Grand Rapids. Then gas got to be $3 a gallon and people moved, they couldn't afford to commute 100 miles round trip every day. Just a few years ago Newaygo County was one of the fastest growing counties in the state, but no more. With almost no industry other than agriculture (we do have the Gerber Baby Food Company and Magna Donnelly, but Donnelly is a car parts manufacturer and that says enough about their employees currently), there is virtually no "local" job market. Hello! Thanks for asking how it went! We went for a week at the end of July, and overall it was a good trip. Thank you all for your advice. I took it to heart, and when I was having moments of insecurity, all of your words would come to mind. I only bought clothes that I really liked and felt comfortable in-- and I think I looked the best I could. More importantly, I tried to just relax and have fun. My little boy had a fantastic time playing with his cousins, swimming, and going to the beach. I actually had quite a bit of relaxation time because he was so occupied with the kids. There was the usual level of drama (family disagreements, one SIL going through an ugly divorce, too much drinking) but I tried to ignore it and not get involved. The only shopping I did was at the bookstore :) and I didn't see anyone famous this year! My SIL saw Sarah Jessica Parker one day, but I wasn't there. Thanks again :) Jen

LOL Ok I put away the fringe and glue gun :oP And called the blinds guy (they're apparently in but I have to get on the schedule). Our lake "unfroze" yesterday, literally we went from just a little clear water at the edge of the lake to a complete lake with no ice in just a few hours. The loons are back and we had to fight for a spot at the picnic tables last night heh heh It's still very dirty out (typical in AK due to what we call breakup...or when the snow banks start to unfreeze and break across) and we have volcanic dust everywhere! But from the bedroom it looks nice LOL We are so close to the lake that yes we're sort of on stilts :) But it's really pilings and they're hidden under the house (we're built in the marsh on the edge). We have a strip of yard on one side that runs about 1' wide up to 5' wide. (They mow in 30 seconds LOL) And yes it's our main house (we call it the lake house to distinguish it from the other house near the lake which is called the rental LOL) We finish the sale of the rental this week, and then we'll probably buy our winter house (victorian) in September. Ok have that straight? LOL DH feels we should reduce the drapery budget if sheets will do :oP MEN!!!

Rod Stewart's is the most appealing to me, as well. It looks like a real library. But I would have to clear away all those knicknacks. Of course, as I typed that I looked around my own room. Hmm, needs to be tidied up a bit. Too many half-finished projects sitting around in little piles.

The furniture looks a bit too squishy for me too.

Put me in the Rod Stewart camp, as well. I could just envision sinking into that "squishy" sofa and reading one of those tomes. I like soft furniture, Rosefolly, as long as I'm able to get myself up again after sitting down. Plus, I love elephants, and he seems to collect them.

The Lagerfeld library did intrigue me, though.

Was anyone else surprised by Frank Sinatra? I had never thought of him as a reader.

I liked Rod Stewarts also. I really didn't care for Lagerfield's. Garbo's was the one that I think looked as though it was arranged for show.
