Delbard roses

I went to Kmart this morning & there they were waiting for me I'm sure, I bought Grimaldi, & Guy Savoy they were reduced to $12 each, I think that was a bargain on what I have read I have potted them till spring as the frosts are bad & last year some new bare rooted roses in the ground turned black & didn't grow

So the Delbards are at K-mart now. That should solve the overpricing problem with Delbards at nurseries in short order.

Delbard has some good roses but I never saw why I should pay $40 or so for a potted specimen. Good shopping Ginnybee!

Yup, in Kmart katoomba too. But watch out - the ones there had been stored for some time by somebody; the stems were beginning to get that grey look and a few had the beginnings of longitudinal wrinkling. I trust the Kmart person in charge who said they had put them out as soon as they arrived but somewhere along the line after digging up they had been stored. They were full price at $14.95 but it's no bargain if they die or languish.

If you want a Delbard from Ashdown, you have to request it from their library. I think they've had very high demand on these roses which is why they don't often get listed for sale. Both of my Delbard's, Grimaldi and Edgar Degas, did very well in their first winter. Grimaldi is already a large bush and just started blooming. I got Henri Matisse and Imperatrice Farah this year, and I'm hoping to get a few more next year.

All you need to know is, "the delbard rose" is another class of roses. You've got David Austin roses - which usually associate with "English" roses. Here, the Delbard roses - associate with the "French" roses and is bred by the Delbard family. There are about 3 main groups of the Delbard roses: 1) "The Delbard Painters Collections" Most roses in this section are named after some famous painters like Henri Matisse, Camille Pisarro etc. The flowers tend to have stripes - which does in fact looks like it has being painted on. 2)Delbard Couture Collection - don't really know much about them. All I know is, they don't have stripes, and the colours of the flowers tend to be dazzling. I'm thinking of getting Carmagnole - a new 2007 release. 3)Delbard Grand Parfums Collection - here you have strong perfume roses such as dioressence, souvenir de louis amade etc. Again, no stripes. 4)Delbard Rose de Libertie Collection - no scent - but masses of bloom. ie. paris 2000. This is Carmagnole - from the Couture collection - new release.

Nahema is insanely perfumed...but is, I am afraid, leaving my garden on account of persistent die back, uneven and gracelessly stiff habits (a climber? - I think not) and horrible ugly foliage. It isn't the unyielding stiff canes which annoy me because Meg, grown nearby, has similar (but a hugely generous single summer flush), it is the uneven distribution of large yet brittle canes and parsimonious amount of blooms (after 4 years in FULL sun). For sure, a single bloom of that silvery-pink is lovely and the fragrance is to die for.....but. A few years ago, one of the larger garden companies like T&M or maybe Unwins, were heavily promoting Delbard roses - a couple of people I know bought a set (the painter series and Papi Delbard) but they are/were complete rubbish in a damp and cool English summer. However....in Crete? I also grow a few renaissance roses which, as a group, are all very tall (6-7feet), very stoutly upright (almost like a fastigiate yew in profile with blooms somewhat out of reach or sight) and horribly predisposed to blackspot (at least in my allotment). However, they do produce very good flowers for cutting and have a reliable, if delayed, rebloom (a second flush just coming along now). The sort of plant which makes a good freestanding specimen but assorts less well with others, especially those of a looser, more tumbling habit.

I don't know much about the Delbard roses, but they are being made more available to the U.S. and Canada, it seems to me, and I like what I see and read about them. The rose that has appealed most to me lately is Soeur Emmanuelle, sold by Palatine. I so wish I had the room for it. Sara, don't you have Frederic Mistral? I bought a Grimaldi at Garden Week last year from a reputable rose grower here. It was covered in blooms and I succumbed to it - but have to say it's a less-than-spectacular rose for me. Yes, it produces flowers but they I don't particularly like their form - open very early and a bit blowsy - and no smell.

I paid $25 for an impulse buy. I think your $12, Jan, is just about the limit I'd pay for it - but maybe you'll have more luck with it than I have.

The 2 roses I bought are a little bit tired I think for the reason you gave Meryl2 they had only had them in for a few days one of them has got wrinkling on it I checked before buying, keep docket in case of trouble & I will get refund I hope this won't be nesessary, I soaked them in seasol mix before planting heres hoping

This afternoon I thought I'd check out the local K-Mart to see if they had any Delbard roses. I did find some but most of them looked dead. However, I found a Camille Pissarro that looked like it might make it, but I, too, am keeping the docket. At the moment my poor specimen is soaking in a bucket of water with a bit of seasol in it. I wish myself good luck.

Jan and the rest of you, you are so baad. I spent all of yesterday resisting the trip to Cairns to look at the Kmart roses but after reading that they had Delbards in when I was online this morning I gave in.
Bought Camille Pissaro, Dioressence, Le Rouge et le Noir then succumbed to Betty Boop. They were all $14.95 though, I see that that is the price direct from Rankins. They looked alright though a little dry. Mine are soaking and will go straight into the garden as we don't have to worry about frosts here.
I hope you get as much joy out of Grimaldi as I have had in the last year. Along with Gold Bunny he is my very best performer.

Had a look in Warrawong (near Wollongong) today - was SO proud of myself as I did not buy anything - a lot of DA's at $7.30 but the guy told me they had been there since Mothers day (but what year I asked). Waiting for my orders from the nurseries that I know will be in better order than the poor dried out lot for $7.30.
