Hyacinths and daffs

Hi Friends,

Long time no see, but it takes so long to pass all the ads these days. However, the flowers in the garden are so pretty at the moment, what a lovely time to see all the roses bursting into green, but the daffs, hyacinths, helebores, cinerarea, primroses all out and so pleasing to watch. Here are some in our pots this year. And isn't the rain great?

How is everyone? Hope you have some rain in Queensland and other dry places.

Hello Tricia, very few posters here now.
Your pots look lovely , especially the Hyacinths.

You can keep your rain, we have had the coldest/wetest winter for years, almost enough to make one want to shift to Queensland.

Well, I happened upon this post (after the fact) because I too was worried about my early sprouting bulbs (I planted many many hyacinth and paperwhites, and crocus and muscari, all of which are popping through the ground (some of the paperwhites have flowered already). I was so worried about the last few very cold nights we have had.... But I'm SOOOOOO relieved to have read from those above that they will be fine and in fact LIKE the cold....what a relief.

I thought I'd update what happened to my blooms. We have had 3 nights when the temps fell below freezing--probably 27 or 28 for a few hours. The daffs are a little droopy and will probably have a shorter bloom life than if the temps had stayed warmer. The hyacinths seem to have done better. And the blooms I brought into the house are now about ready to toss on the compost pile. Marcia

Hi Tricia, Nice to hear from you again. Your pots of bulbs and the camelia are really beautiful. I's good to hear that you (and Heather in NZ) have had good rains. We are still a bit short (about 1/3 of what we expect from winter I believe), but Qld is much worse.

Beautiful bulbs Tricia I love your Hyacinths and daffs I wish I could grow them here but it is much too warm, got plenty of Freesia's Anemones and Ranunculus out and the Hippeastrums stalks with buds have started pushing through the soil already.

Yes the dry here in SE Qld is getting worst I cannot remember the last time it has rained. Very cold mornings where we live though I think the days have been warmer than normal I have not had cherry size nectarines on the tree this early before. Sadly we will be going on to Level 4 Water restrictions in five weeks if we get no decent Rain and that could mean we will not be permitted to use outside taps but I guess we will just have to wait and see what the * Powers That Be * decide on.
