macarthur palms

Since macarthur palms are native to australia, can anyone tell me if I planted some too close. I planted 4 palms about 1 foot from a buried pvc water main pipe to my home. Is this a potential disaster in my future or am I over reacting?

g'day kekoa,

palms in general don't have those sort of intrussive damaging root systems, and with the main bringing water into you home they are usually sealed so that no roots can disturb/penetrate them, the only possibility being should the palm blow over could it break the pipe my moving it?? that is probably something especially with the mcarthur palms that won't be an issue.

Thanks Len, I guess I tend to "sweat the small details" in my garden. Hate to make a mistake, then pay for it years down the road. Checked out your website. Great site with a lot of useful info.!

I am considering ordering seeds from Coconut Climber on eBay. They have Dictyosperma on there listed as an excellent houseplant. I was also considering a Spindle Palm or MacArthur palm. Which of these would be best for a houseplant? It would be moved outside during the summer and taken indoors during the winter. Can anyone fill me in on the growth rate of these plants? Thank you

Thanks for the answer. I guess I tend to worry too much about the small details in my garden. I just hate to be like some people who dont plan right and end up having a nightmare years down the road. Like planting a ficus tree right next to their septic tank! I know palms can get large root balls and that made me nervous.

Welcome JMLz16! Thats a nice list of palms. That fishtail palm must be a beauty and San Franciso defintiely has a pretty good climate for many different palms. Heres an updated list of my palms... (some of this list was copy, pasted, and updated from the list above) ...... Windmill palm (5) (3 in the ground 2 have been through 2 winters, one has been through its 1st winter now, and 2 are 4 year olds that are still pretty small and are in pots) Pindo palm (3) (one that has been through 2 winters in the ground and one that will be going through its first winter in the ground this year.)
