Thanks! I google searched Dr. Huey. I'll bet that's what I have. The hybrid tea must have died. My mom had a few climbers, but I don't see her having chosen one with such a small flower. I'll keep it, as it's the only rose I have left from my Mom. If it lived through 13 years of total neglect in an all-but abandoned garden, it deserves to live. I will have to pay attention when it blooms, and take pictures. Unlike the others (planted or transplanted last fall), the climber already has small leaf buds. It looks like I should prune that one in the fall. It's planted against the neighbor's waist high wooden fence, and is flopping over it badly. I'll see if I can tie it down to arch sideways along the fence. The canes are thin and flexible.

These are all herbaceous plants that normally lose their tops every year and grow new ones in the spring. Any that might have seeds useful to birds during the fall and winter could have spent tops left for that reason. Otherwise these could be left for any winter protection they might happen to confer, of if nothing else to show where the roots are located where stepping on them or burying them might be a possibility. Perennials prone to being rotted out by fallen and matting tree leaves or having the new shoots destroyed by slugs might need to have spent stems removed in fall so that such debris can be more easily removed. A common example of this type is the chrysanthemum, its aromatic and grayish foliage indicating it wants an open and well-drained situation with no tree debris present.

Perhaps it is not necessary to add more mulch for clematis in my area as most winters we have good snow coverage. But some winters, not so much. When I attended local gardening workshops the pros always emphasized winter mulching, but, they mostly admitted that they themselves do not add winter mulch. So, who knows? Since I collect the neighbors' shredded leaves to compost and mulch other plants around the clematis I add it to them as well. Most clematis die back to near the ground for me. My hope is that covering the prune 2 clematis well will keep more of the stems alive higher so I can get that early spring bloom on old wood. Sometimes it works. The clematis I grow from seed and from cuttings are kept in pots and put in the ground in holding beds. These I don't want to take a chance of losing so they get completely covered by shredded leaves for the winter.

It's a nice tree. The only problem I see would be that pruning might be tough and eventually it might shade out the roses. Not really a fan of people who advocate to chop down healthy trees. But It's up too you but with or without the tree you are probably still going to have trouble with pests or diseases since it's all roses and once one gets ill it's easier for it to spread rose to rose to rose. And you will still get aphids and japanese beetles...they LOVE roses. If you do decide to get rid of the tree, it's not very big so think about posting an ad that if someone wants your ornamental tree they can come by and dig it up and give it a new home, plenty of people do this in my town and plenty of people have nothing against a free larger tree for their yard than what they get at a local box store. Also I would suggest if you are removing it, replace it with a tree or something that is not related to roses (no rose tree). Diversity is important for a garden, if something happens to your roses it likely won't spread to an unrelated tree but will to another rose bush. It's easier to replace a sick/dying rose bush than it is to lose an established tree that takes a long time to reach its full beauty.
