I used to look down on the double snowdrops as well, but then someone pointed out that they do show up much better in the garden and also seem to last longer, two things which are hard to thumb your nose at, especially if you have a woodland to fill! -and what's this woodland which floral speaks of? Does everyone have a woodland now? Maybe I need a woodland... it wouldn't be the worst thing to have! The 'fly tipping' theory may be quite legitimate. From what I understand double snowdrops cannot produce seed which is why in the picture the rounded ovary part at the top of the flower is small and shrunken when compared to the rounded shape of a plain single flower. They are pollen fertile though, and the doubling seems to be dominant so a single pollinated with double pollen produces double flowered seedlings.... too much? I think doubles are usually spread around by animals digging or other soil disturbances. Oh and I'm thrilled to finally see some of the snowdrop wood, it's great to see how well they are doing and how well they will likely continue to do whether you clear brambles this year or next or in ten years. You of course need to add eranthis in with the snowdrops and cyclamen coum in the better drainage areas. Too cliché? I don't think you'll care when the flowers open... sorry if my jealousy over your woodland is making me sound controlling...

So pretty, Woody! Every fall, I think that I should plant snowdrops and more crocuses out front. I love the way it looks when the lawn is speckled with their flowers, but somehow, I never quite get around to it. Sigh.

True, peren.all. "Raised spots in the sun": the contrast between sunnier and less sunnier locations in the garden is certainly very noticeable at this time of the growing season. Thanks, NHBabs. The garden's beginning to green up. I particularly notice the fresh green leaves of some primulas. They look like they belong in a salad. Not saying they're edible! On the other hand, the leaves of the hellebores frankly look awful. There's actually one blue-purple flower on one lungwort. Haven't seen any bees yet, but native bees here love lungworts.

how deep did you plant them... the general rule.. is 3 times the diameter of the bulb ... and as i recall these bulbs are less than an inch.. so 3 inches might be a good depth ... [and since canada and all, eh.. i will say they are less than a meter.. so 3 times less than a meter... lol ... self-entertaining this morning ..lol...] another reason for lack of bloom.. would be too much high nitro fert... like lawn fert.. which forces lush green growth over bloom... sometimes if they are planted right on the edge of the lawn.. improper lawn fert'g can cause problems... ken
