Hi all, I have just asked one of our regular gardenwebbers if it is possible to strike cuttings from flowers in an arrangement. (I had tried previously to strike others in a mixture of sand and peatmoss, cutting at an angle and removing the leaves).

She suggested placing them in water which I have done. Is there a name for this means of propogation and have any other readers had success with striking from cut flowers.

The arrangement included gerberas, iris, tulips, chrysanths and carnations and another yellow little filler

If the gerberas have been cut, no. I seem to recall a post here a few years ago that mentioned the possibility of propagating the gerbera if it had been pulled from the plant and a small piece of the plant still remaining on the bottom of the stem.

If the carnations have any little side-shoots of leaves still attached, they will grow from these, if the flowers are fresh enough - 'pat' the head of the flower, and if it feels crispy, rather than soft, you have a chance, otherwise forget it. Likewise, if the chrysanthemums are fresh they will grow from stem cuttings, cut just below a node, with some foliage still attached further up.

I am only guessing at your filler. If it is solidago (look it up on the internet) it will also grow from stem cuttings.

If the little yellow filler is solidago it will grow from a cutting.

Carnations and Crysanths - I have often struck these. Gerberas - it is actually recommended that they be pulled rather than cut, when harvested, but the florist may have to shorten the stems. I have a friend who has struck these from floral arrangements.
Irises and tulips- definitely not - they grow from a bulb or rhizome.
I have also had pineapple lily (Eucomis) develop tiny bulbils at the lower end of a stalk in a vase of water.

LOL! You guys are cracking me up. I was thinking of posting some non-PETA friendly suggestions but you guys beat me to it! Haha. Laurie, you put a mixture of eggs, oil and garlic on your plants? Sounds to me like you made them MORE appetizing! Actually my blooms smell good enough to me to eat, so I guess I can't blame the deer. Though if deer were eating my blooms I'd be after them as well. As it is, mine are falling off the plant before they even open fully because of the 100+ temps. here. Hazel's solution sounds promising if you don't have other pets. Or maybe get creative and find something with a motion sensor that would activate and move or make noise when the deer approach, like some of those Halloween door decorations! We do feel for you. In this one I used: 'Rosanna', 'Pomponella', 'Lyda Rose', 'Darlow's Enigma', 'Baltimore Belle'. Valerian Officinalis is a filler. Here I used: 'Windermere', 'Summer Memories', 'Nina Renaissance', 'Gettysburg', 'Pope John Paul II', 'Ice Girl', 'Snow Waltz', 'Elina', 'Lions Rose', 'Ledreborg Castle', 'Kosmos', 'Parky'. Euphorbia 'Diamond Frost' as a filler. Roses here are: 'Windermere', 'Graham Thomas', 'Caramel Antike', 'St. Alban', 'Comte de Champagne', 'Pat Austin', 'Snow Waltz'. And the fillers are Daisies, Salvia Farinacea and Caryopteris flowers. This one made only with roses, no companion plants, and the roses are: 'Windermere', 'Radio Times', 'Wildeve, 'Bouquet Parfait' and 'Rushing Stream'

Hi Ken, Thanks for commenting. Indeed, the question is what exactly this is. In case it is a sort of reproduction behaviour, then yes, I would like to know how to proceed to make it a new and independent plant. I have not found more info on how propagate oxalis triangularis, other than dividing the rhizomes. Also, thank you for the info about the houseplant forum. Beaware that some florists use a small amount of roundup so that this can not occur, particularly if the flowers are not from Aussie. NZ flower sellers are reknowned for this.

Karen, I'd be interested to hear more about this if you have the time. I think if this is happening, it is more likely to be the growers, rather than florists, that are doing this?! After all, the florists are the ones who have to handle the stuff.
