Does anyone know about Sexy Rexy

A friend has asked me to find out about this Rose, strange name isn't it?

Would it grow in Sub tropical Rockhampton, which is burning hot and sometimes steamy in summer and beautiful in winter.?

Oh , and where would I be able to get her one ?

Ashmeri, she is a good performer here in Perth. Lovely camellia-like blooms of a coral pink and a low growth to about 1m. Not sure about how she will go in the humidity as she does get black spot here.
You will find her one of the most popular roses and available from most nurseries.
The name was a pet name given to the seedling when it was being tested. The name somehow stuck.

Thank you Deryn, I will think about it as the humidity is a bit of a problem.
I guess it would be a good idea to find a Rose that looks like Sexy Rexy and doesn't have the black spot problem.
Do you know one ?

Check out SR on Help Me find - it is pink. However, there is one picture that shows buds and open flowers the colors you describe - the poster says this is a sport on his SR bush that is a different color from the rest of the bush. I would take yours home and plant it and see what it does! Jackie

I experienced much the same thing, View. I lost more of the potted ones than the ones in the ground. I'm not sure why either. They were well protected and had snow cover as well. Like you, when I took them out of storage in April many of them had green cane. Later that all died back and now they're just stumps. Where as the ones in the ground for the most part died to the soil but are coming up with new basals from the grafts. The only thing I can think of is that it was just too cold for too long a period of time and the damage was already done. There was one two week period when we never got above single digits at all and were well below zero every night. As low as -26 degrees a few nights. That's pretty cold and is probably what did them in. I haven't counted all of them out yet because things have not been very warm here still but if they all do die I'll have lost some where around 60 roses altogether. A few in the ground but mostly in the pots. Even the tree rose that was heavily wrapped and in the shed has no signs of life yet. I'm sad about some of them but I have a huge want list and will slowly replace them with those. I'm looking at it as a chance to regroup and maybe make some better decisions on what I want in my garden. This isn't the first time I've suffered heavy losses. I lost 30 some in April of 2007 when we had that Easter freeze. I'm sure this won't be the last time either. We can do our best but Mother Nature is still in charge. Every once in a while she lets us know that.

'Tickled Pink' or 'Sexy Rexy'??

Sexy Rexy does not do well in some parts of the country according to comments from some growers. However, here in Tropical Minnesota (zone 4a), I am hard pressed to name a pink Floribunda that is his better or even equal. Believe me I am looking. S R will spot if not sprayed and even get a bit of PM in bad years for PM. However, with only minor and irregular spraying S R stays very clean. Sr greens up early, but grows slowly. The first flush usually peaks here in July. The first flush is usually large candelabras of blooms. The Repeat is slow and the second blooms often come as singles on stems. Some seasons there are only two flushes of bloom. For all his flaws though, I don't know of a better pink Floribunda in my zone. S R survives the winter with minimal protection and even thrives here. Many don't. The spring flush is generally spectacular. Some years I have had to stake the plant so that the weight of the blooms would not break the canes. The blooms are a pleasing color of pink to my eye and the blooms are very full with ruffled and scalloped petals. I have not observed them to blow faster than average in my northern climate. S R has flaws, but, to date,no replacement is in sight. Our Lady of Guadalupe is a nice rose that is just a little too delicate for Tropical Minnesota. You might see if she grows well in Toronto. I think that you may have a better climate there than MN. South of us in latitude anyway. Charles

Does anyone know much about iPad's?

If you’re looking for a used ipad mini, I think the ipad mini 4 was the last one with a nice amount of storage (128 GB)…afterwards they chopped it by about half. (so maybe you’d have to buy apple icloud? 🤔). I have the mini 4 (I bought it in 2019 but I think they came out in 2013 ?)

Marion, that would be a brave call. Rocky is a very different climate to the places where roses normally thrive.

Purely on theory, I'd recommend the Tea roses and some of the Alister Clarks because their bloodline stems from rosa gigantea, a species that comes from hot south asia. Even they're not immune from fungus though. Is there a local rosarian or nursery person you could ask?

What's in a name :)
I see this one in the Trewallyn catalogue (they are at Bundaberg), send you the phone number if you like. Or, if you were brave, you could see what the nursery near the airport has to say.....
Good luck

Thanks all, I am never game enough to grow roses here on my place as the previous owners said they had nothing but trouble, I don't know which roses they had though.

The picture of the Alister Clark is lovely will look into them.
Oh, Rose, I do know he sells lots of roses but you do need a long time and to spend there, all spent listening, if you know what I mean. !!!!

To expand further on how Sexy Rexy got it's name. Sam McGredy gave it the name to honour a very good friend of his...don't know his full name but it was Rex....he died of cancer.

Anyone who knows S. McGredy will know he has a wicked sense of humour.

Marion, for the real info about growing roses in Qld, ask the Rose Society of Queensland. Secretary: David Taylor, 07 3342 0656.

Lozza, It is funny really, when I started this thread I was looking for a rose and information for a friend.
Now here I am HOOKED on them myself.
What a strange world it is.

I am a sponge at the moment and feel as though I am gleaning information from all sides and it is wonderful.

Thanks all, Marion
