I do the old torch and squish method on a wet night!! If you don't like the squish bit, I have also put salt in the bottom of the bucket and they don't like that at all!!

I find torch and squish the most effective!

However beer in an icecream container is meant to attract them and drown them, might want to cover it from your dog though!

Shirley Stackhouse is very big on putting some dog food in some terracotta pipe which attracts the snails, so you can then upend the whole lot into a bucket of salty water. I don't think she offered a solution to the dog having a go at it though !

A couple of safe solutions are:
Half bury a bottle of beer on its side, with a little bit of beer left in it. The snails crawl in and die.
Or sprinkle coffee grounds around the plants and snails will stay away.

Chooks love snails, they will eat the lot.

So do lizards! Keeping the dog away from THEM though, might prove more difficult than from the dog biscuits.

Collect them and put them in someone's desk drawer at work for a joke. Its a cracker because if the person is on a couple of days off the snails will leave cool track marks through all their paperwork. Ha. :-)

My aunt had a terrier who was fantastic on hunting out and chomping up snails. I don't think she actually ate them, just crushed them with her teeth. They called her "French Poodle" when she did this, and it became a command to hunt out the snails.
Our dogs both hate alcohol. You only have to hold the glass to their noses to have them race away in disgust. The beer method is a good one. Orange halves is another good one. It doesn't kill them - you collect the 1/2s, with snails intact and dispose of them. Sawdust sprinkled round tender young plants deters them, but if it gets wet it won't work. Not much use at this time of year.
Lizards are brilliant snail killers, but unfortunately wake up a few weeks after the snails. If you poison the snails, you will poison the lizards, and any birds that consume the dead snails too. Much better to forget about poisons all together, and encourage the predaters.
I would love to let my chooks loose in the garden, but the dogs would unfortunately have them for dinner :-(

Check out gardenlen's site. He suggests coffee! Apparently American research has found that small concentrations of caffeine repels slugs and snails and stronger amounts kill them. Also it is totally safe in the garden (unless your dog likes lots of coffee). I haven't tried it yet but will when it stops raining as slugs are eating my strawberries.

Copper sheeting available from the art and crafts store cut into 1 inch strips and put it around the plant. the copper causes an electric shock for the snail - so they about face! Works well for me.I heard on a radio show this week that of all the beers tested Heinekin was the beer of choice for the snails. More of them were attracted to the Heinekin beer trap above all other beers!

Good grief, Heineken for snails! Seems everyone's a connoiseur these days!

Oh, goodness me, I would rather spend a whole night collecting snails than giving them a nice drink, I prefer to drink it myself. Wood ashes sprinkled around tender plants form a barier and enrich the soil in potash at the same time.
