Checked the potted seeds in the fridge tonight - temp is at about 0C and found Gentiana wutaiensis (now called Gentiana macrophylla var. fetissowii) had germinated!!!!!omes form China/Himalayas so I suppose that I shouldn't be surprised. Now the task is to keep it alive!!!

Well done. I did not know what is was so I looked it up.
Lovely blue flower, maybe you will have to leave it outside.

That's a new thing for me, sprouting seeds in the fridge....

Hi I am still having a time trying to get a new trade list on this site. To answer your query. I will list a few easy to access for me right now. Most are way down in the bottom land valley below the house, which is really wild at this time of year and hard to access, but of the hardy runners that I can get to and dig starts of are the following: Sasa palmata, Phyllostachys aureosulcata, Phyllostachys aur var spectabilis, Pseudosasa japonica (Jap. arrow bamboo, Otatea azteca (Mex weeping bamboo now in large pots, I can take a few cuttings, Bambusa ventricosa (Buddha belly bamboo) and possibly a Giant Grey timber bamboo 9Phyllo. nigra 'henon') I am not sure if your gentians will grow here, I am in zone 6 but winters have varied in temps from zone 5 to zone 7 b at times. We are very wet this year but it usually gets hot and dry for most of our summers. Could use some tips on where to plant them, best type of soil, how much water, what and when to feed, etc.etc. It might be best to do this via personal e-mail for the shipping details, what do you think?

Because the flowers have been pollinated? And the added weight of the seeds pulls them over? IME, many, if not most, plants do this.

Hi Mistymorn and Cherly, I have some gentian seeds which I collected From Lord Howe Island about 11 months ago. Any Idea as to how I go about planting them? LHI is rather warm I live in Melb. However about 10 yrs back I did see Gentian plants growing in an old garden!!!

Sorry April I have never grown them maybe Lomatia can help.
If he germinates them in the fridge Vic weather could be OK for them ...Cheers..MM.

April, the seeds need to be fresh as well as having a period of cold. Surface sow them and place them in a sealed container in the fridge for about 6 weeks. There are some very rare forms of Gentian in very localised spots in Australia (Gentianella is more common here). I couldn't find a native Gentian on a flora list for LHI. Were the plants in a private garden?

I've heard of people having things growing in their fridges, but usually it's not intentional lol!

Please post us some pictures when they get to blooming stage....would love to see them.
