Cutting propagation - any tips?

HI All,

I am hoping to take lots of cuttings later this winter and spring to fill a large area of my garden. I was thinking of buddelia, fuschia, indian hawthorn, camellia, mock orange, hydranger.... a mixture of softwood and hardwood I guess.

I have done some internet research, as I have never tried this before - but does any one have any fail safe tips from their experience?

In my experience you will always lose some so make sure you take plenty of cuttings. The soil should be a quite sandy and kept moist. Use a pencil (unsharpened end) or stick to make a hole then use it again to press down the soil at the base of the cutting, not just at the surface, to get rid of air pockets. Keep in a area where they get light but not strong sun. With some plants (such as hydrangea and mona lavender) you can just stick them in the ground. Some even take when thrown on a greanwaste heap. I sometimes go to the trouble of using rooting powder but I don't know if that has more success than without it. Good luck.

Hi Jay,
I seem to have more success when I don't get too fussed about it. In fact most of my cuttings are snipped off while pruning and just stuck in the ground next to the 'mother'. I reckon if she's doing alright there, then so will the babies. I know...a bit whacky, but it works for me. I guess all I'm really saying is that it's not rocket science...just go for it!

My butterfly bush have about 3 leaves on average, they are really small leaves. There is no water in the pan, I watered the pots outside & let them drain, and then I put inside so none are sitting in any water. Its not getting any direct sun but I guess it could be getting too hot. I started yesterday to leave the lid cracked open to get more air inside. Show off Betty! ;-) My cuttings are about 5" with all leaves removed except the top 1-2. I started 4 yesterday outside the box, hope those make it. I am going to buy perlite & mix it with peat moss & hope that does better for me.

Slightly bury the end of the leaf that was attached to the plant. And do NOT water. Only lightly mist every few days if you so desire. I think there's no need to give them that much time to callous over--for instance, one day rather than three or so. But if you're placing the leaf in completely dry soil--which you should anyway--it'll callous over while planted. So, I skip over the step of leaving the leaf out to callous for some time because it'll do that for you while stuck in soil. I remove the leaf from the main plant and stick the end in dry soil immediately most of the time. Easy-peasy. This post was edited by teatree on Thu, Jul 25, 13 at 22:43

Well, I can report a bit on Ranunculus repens now. I've been using some this week in small cut flower bouquets and have been leaving some out at room temperature to observe. The vase life of the flower itself is very good lasting at least a week in good condition but the stem is another matter. The stems are brittle and also tend to turn into brown mush even while the flower continues to remain acceptable. In my latest arrangements I avoided having tall stems due to concerns that they might flop over. Instead I arranged the flowers such that a nearby foliage plant would support the flower in the event that the stem loses turgidity. The stems seemed to hold up best if I chose only the thickest stems, recut them underwater and then refrigerated them immediately. I would say that this flower is acceptable for cut flower use but only in small vase arrangements not in celeophane wrapped flowers or mid to large arrangements and not in situations where the stem might get pinched. I didn't bother trying any tests out of water as I'm sure the stem would flop very rapidly.

Hey Squirrley: We don't field grow anything "officially" but dig and divide from the garden. I start as soon as anything pops up because you want to be able to provide water at this critical time. For example, I've stopped dividing now because we will shortly be going into a complete water ban here. Cramps the style! At church we use Fafard for potting. Shrubs, daylilies and larger perennials get a mix of Farard and "pine bark fines". Sunshine mix is another great potting medium that pro growers often use. If you can get a business # then you can buy in bulk at wholesale and it is feasable. If not, these are expensive growing mediums. The pine bark fines help drainage, and they also help to keep the pots from getting too dry. The main reason growers don't use peat based mixes is that they dry out and are hard to re-wet. So there has to be a very concentrated effort on keeping everything moist all the time. The hardest thing to do when home growing is to try and have plants ready for the public. Professional growers may field grow but then pot up early into greenhouses and force bloom for buyers. You need to build up a customer base locally that will understand you are not seeing blooming plants. It can be done. GGG

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. I once had a double flowered Buddleia Colvellii that I was desperate to take cuttings from, because we were shifting house. The first and second attempts were miserable failures. The week before we left, I took one last batch of cuttings. I ended up with 50% strike rate - about 6 plants. I was very pleased!
