Gardening in Oz

All this rain in 24 hours.

I could not believe the rain gauge when I checked it this morning I had to fill the tube up over five times and it came to a total of 149mm all collected from 7am Wednesday till 7am today Thursday and that brings the total for the past three days to 208mm in my back yard.

How much are you all getting out there, I do hope that there is plenty falling in the Dams, on the Farms and in all the Catchment Areas, and may we get plenty more. Cheers...MM

I have family on the land in Grafton, they have received about 6 inches in the last few days. I just hope it soaks in for everyone.

We saw it on the news this morning could not beleive the rain in qld and nsw. I just checked the radar and unfortunately not much has fallen in either place inland.Nothing as yet in melb. (should make it very easy to plant those roses Im glad the damage was minimal) pam

No, don't like warm. I was so excited by the approach of Fall and Winter and now we'll be back up to the mid 80's by Wednesday. I'm wondering if there are going to be issues with plants thinking it's Spring...lol.. Okay, I admit the mornings and late afternoons are pretty good and there is a nice breeze, but I'd like to see more rain soon. It is so good not to be out there watering.....yet.

Hi Dani I've done some hybridizing and start a lot of seeds also. I don't know if leaving the lights on 24/7 will speed up the 1st bloom season. I could be wrong, but I think it depends more on temps. Unless you live in the south, seed to bloom is generally 3 years. I've had some bloom the 1st year but they can change dramatically so you can't really figure the 1st bloom season being an accurate representation of the true flower. Let us know how it turns out, I'd surely be interested!

Diane, I have noticed your Fourth of July celebrations over there in SE OK always get rained upon. What's that about? Some odd Fourth of July curse? Maybe the clouds will rain themselves out today and then y'all will have a dry Fourth. The timing of the rain is PERFECT for southcentral OK and northcentral Texas because some pastures had become very dry and a few grassfires were occurring (more so on the Texas side than the OK side, but a few on the OK side as well) so all the fire chiefs were worried about fireworks starting grass fires, and all the news stations were interviewing them and they were cautioning everyone to 'be careful'. With the rainfall, the likelihood of big fireworks-caused grassfires has significantly diminished. That's a relief! Paula, We are surrounded by big kids who can't wait for Independence Day to arrive. Here in our neighborhood, people have been setting off fireworks ever since the fireworks stands opened in mid-June. Why save it all for one day? It is only a problem in the city limits where there is a 'no fireworks' ordinance. Out here in the boonies, we've had so many fireworks going off around us that I feel like I'm in a war zone. When Chris and our nieces and nephews were little, we always had a lot of fun here with fireworks, but now that they're older, we don't set off as many. That may change when Maddie is a bit older. By the way, heavier rain has fallen this morning, doubling our rainfall for the last 24 hours from a half inch to a whole inch. I hope it rains all day long, but doubt we'll be that lucky. My rainbarrel is full and so is every bucket and storage tote (they formerly held peaches and plums waiting for their turn in the kitchen) that I could drag outside, as well as Maddie's wading pool which I dragged out of the garage and set under the roof eaves to catch runoff for watering the garden. We can catch a lot of rainfall off the big barn /garage roof. We've 'caught' about 250 gallons in the last 24 hours, but now everything is full, so we won't be catching any more. I may finish up the plums today, although my original plan was to try to work in the garden this a.m. and do the canning in the afternoon. If I do finish the plums today, then tomorrow really will be Independence Day. With heavily overcast skies and recurring bands of rain, it seems like this will not be a day to spend working outside. Just let time dry the area out & stay off the ground to avoid compacting it. We often have drizzling rains through 4th of July & our tomatoes do fine. Easy to forget a soaker. We've all done it. Next time try setting a timer in the house & putting it in your pocket. If you're not sure one will work use a 2nd timer. Also helps if you have a family member or roommate to notify & double check that it's turned off at the time you specify. Write the time down soaker on, soaker off. I know it seems simple, but helps to have that off time written down.

Here in Birkdale we have had 7 inches in three days. Five last night.
Made a bit of a mess of the place but was welcome. My new 15000 litre tank is now full.

Hi Pam I cant plant the roses as all the new holes are full of water
But this afternoon if it clears I will heel them in one of the old veggie plots for now.

I never thought I'd say it but ENOUGH! Pleaaaaaassse. What a waste to see it pouring down the stormwater system. Unfortunately the hinterland hasn't had as much as the Gold Coast, though the dam has received a fair bit and maybe with run-off the end result will be good.
My area has had a ton of the stuff, it hammered down most of the night and then it really got serious and we had 350mm in just 4 hours this morning. Ah well we didn't like that carpet anyway LOL. Heaps of local flooding, doesn't stop the hoons they are going crazy out there.

Alison, I bet little Holly was keen to go out in that, not! If your suburb wasn't famous before for the hoons, it is now. I see a figure of 80% mentioned for the Hinz dam?

We had 575mm in total here- near Murwillumbah- just over the hill had a total of 780mm for the 4 days.
Otherplaces had some amazing 24 hour totals- Gold Coast 510mm in 24 hours.

I'm in the Shoalhaven area on the south coast NSW. We got plenty of rain this week but it hasn't flooded. It was wild and came in sideways. I'm glad it's finished for now, though we're supposed to get some light showers tomorrow. This morning was perfect. After a very wild stormy night I woke up to a clear sky and no wind. There was not a cloud in sight and it was lovely and warm. Everytime we get rain everyone keeps saying we need it (probably out of habit from last year when we were in drought), but really we on the coast have not wanted for much for quite a while. My place hasn't dried out since early in the year. It's the catchment areas that need it. We're quite spoilt here. Everything is green and has been all year.

We only got 6:5mm yesterday, but everything is very wet, we even have a couple of puddles
that dont seem to want to dry up and under all the very thick mulch we even have worms.
Isn't that great Cheers....MM.
