These are excellent container plants and are often grown as houseplants in areas where they are not hardy (this used to be listed as a Ligularia, so some confusion persists about hardiness. Minimum temp is 10F, so zone 7). It definitely wants shade and will tolerate full shade conditions well. Perhaps because I am not in a terrifically warm climate, I've not found its watering needs significant, but it doesn't like to dry out :-) For more info, google "Farfugium japonicum"

last call, first person to contact me can get them either through a trade or for shipping, shipping is $5 thanks

Hi all, sorry it took so long to get back its been a busy few days. Yes it is also known as ligularia, I got them from a local master gardener who grows them at the botanical garden. Melanie, pineapple sage would be wonderful, thankyou. Please e-mail me directly, instead of through GW with your address and I will get you mine. thanks very much Lisa

Thank you for your insight. I have a tendency to overwater if anything, but didn't know they were that picky about drought, which could have occured to the one overwintering in my garage. I kind of loose track of time during winter. Or of course I could have overwatered them. There really aren't any more symptoms to describe. The leaves were upright one day, the next they started to droop and on the third day they were all hanging over the edge of the pot. Watering didn't perk them up which is why I suspected overwatering. I've got more coming mail order this spring (including the green/white variegated one which I killed last year along with the regular yellow spotted ones), so I may try a terra cotta pot on some to see if that helps. I sooooo want these to make it. Love them.
