Dealing first with the oval shaped things, most likely this is just scale. The young insects are pale and can move around a bit, when they get older they sort of settle down in one spot and their shells become harder and darker. You generally find two other problems associated with them, in that ants can be associated with scale, sort of "farming" them and..that you then get a sooty mould as a result of the excretions etc.

Healthy plants will recover, and sometimes if the infestations are so bad you need to prune the plant, but I wouldn't be doing that at this time due to the colder weather.

Can you tell us about how tall and wide the plants are, if they are old or newly planted, whether they have flowered before, and what sort of sun/shade position they are in?

White oil treatments will certainly work, but you need to have a bit more of a game plan to deal with scale. And, it won't work instantly, or it may appear not to, and it needs to be repeated because scale have a very fast life-cycle so you need to follow up to make sure you destroy eggs.

Also white oil is fairly harsh on the plants, needs to be applied on shady days to avoid burning, and the best combined with a couple of other treatments depending on how precious those plants are to you.

Such as-

Check for ant activity, and if you see that, start with some ant granules on the ground and a little bit of soemthing like vaseline on the trunk of the plant will stop them climbing it.

Before late winter, check recommended fertilizer doses for your plants to give them a strong growth in spring

If you have that sooty mould from the scale/ant honey-dew problem, it can be removed with a blast from the hose or more patiently wiping away the more affected areas

Soft scale can be removed with a toothbrush and a little mild soapy water.

There are also systemics you can get to incorporate in the growing mix, and which will subsequently be absorbed into the plants, but you have to be very very careful with their use.

The 2nd problem holes in leaves is probably just some short term problem with grasshoppers or other insects that just pass through and move on, and if so not much you can do about them but accept it and wait for the plant to recover.
