Hi everyone!Just wanting to know how everyone around the Brisbane area faired with all the damaging hail.I'm on the North side of Brisbane and my garden has been totally shredded.With a lot of cold sensitive plants I think I'm going to lose a fair bit.Even this morning I still have a build up of hail in parts.
Dear Melmat, Well I was wondering the same myself. The pictures of those ice-floes built up in parts was amazing. From the Gold Coast perspective we had about 10 minutes of drizzle and just felt sorry for everyone who was copping it. Sorry to hear of the shredding but I don't think the cold is ultimately going to kill too much as the day-time temps are still quite warm as must be the soil temps underneath. Just do a little unemotional assessment after your clean-up, and just tidy up what plants you can in terms of a prune, and fingers crossed in spring they will be happy again. Glad to hear tonight's predictions of similar seem to have come to nothing.
Those images of hail were pretty amazing. Newspaper reports indicated that the western and northern parts of Bris bore the brunt of the storm. Here in the inner-mid southside, there was just heavy rain accompanying the lightning and thunder.
Just logged onto the Bris CC's online library catalogue, to find the following message: "Toowong Library will be closed on Friday 20th May 2005 and Saturday 21st May 2005 due to storm damage. We apologise for the inconvenience." So those areas that got hail got it severely.
Hi Melmat, I too suffered in a big way with the garden. My Bromeliads especially were shredded. I could not see the front lawn for ice and I am just glad that the car was away safe and sound. Hopefully there will not be another hail storm like that for a long time to come. Michael
The following morning I had an appointment in Taringa - on the way home at 10.30 there were still huge drifts of hail on the sports field as I passed the Boys School, after several hours of bright sunshine. Tony
Condolences to those who lost plants, but it *could* be seen as an opportunity, assuming you havent lost your shade canopies. How many times have you thought 'I'd like to give the garden a revamp', but been unwilling to uproot your existing plants ? I know this probably seems trite to those of you who are regretting the loss of much-loved plants, but its the most positive spin I can put on it.
