vielchenblau & golden showers

Hi (This question was also under mail order roses too). I have just added to my order fom Treloars, a veilchenblau, which is a climber and a purple colour. Has anyone got it and if so, how does it perform? Also if you order roses such as Julia's rose is it better as a bush rose or a climber?. I thought the golden showers was a repeat flowering rose and I have had it since mid 2005 but so far nothing. It is making vigorous growth bt not a bud in sight.Jan

I have grown Golden Showers at several locations and it has always been a top performer. Held it's colour very well and was usually in bloom all season. Also blooming well the first year. Each time I have grown it was on a solid wall in full sun, so it got a lot of heat, however this was in a cooler climate similar to Tasmania. It was placed on a fan trellis growing upright. Fed it every 2 weeks with a soluable.
I have been looking for it, can you tell me where you got yours from?

I have Veilchenblau which I grew from a cutting taken (because I fell in love with it) from a very old Blue Mountains garden before I found out the name of the rose. Had I known it was a once-flowering rambler, I might not have bothered (because I only have so much room and want lots of performance in exchange for giving the space) but I am so glad I did. The spring display is wonderful. The rose now completely covers a very tall tripod. It is almost thornless (which makes training it a breeze), has attractive light green foliage and in spring completely smothers itself in clusters of small, semi-double flowers, which are violet-purple with white centres and golden stamens. It has a delicious, rather citrussy perfume. Its flowering each year is an EVENT.

Thanks, Kate, for your response. As far as mulch goes, I'm curious about the best kind to use for roses. We do have the most unusual winters with a very unpredictable freeze-thaw cycle here along the coast. Now you have me wondering.... should I replant it deeper this fall so that the graft is below ground? I thought I gave it a good home... digging out a deep hole, replacing some of the dirt with a compost/dirt mixture, placing the rose on a big center cone so that the roots hang could grow down the sides, basically trying to have the rose at the same level as it was in the pot. I didn't realize that the graft should be below the surface. I love this rose and want it to thrive. Your success with Golden Showers is very encouraging! Molie

For those of you who slightly cringe at the name "Golden Showers," you might take consolation in the possibility that the name probably comes from Greek mythology. When Zeus decided to have sex with the mortal woman Danae, he came down from Mt. Olympus in the form of what is sometimes called a "golden shower" [either golden-colored liquid or sun-drenched liquid appearing golden] or what others have considered a "shower of gold" [as in gold coins]. Scholars argue over whether Danae was "paid" for her services or not--but at any rate Zeus's "shower" impregnated her with Perseus who would grow up and be the slayer of the monstrous gorgon Medusa--for which I have never forgiven him since Medusa (most unfairly besmirched by Greek patriarchal and misogynistic culture) is one of my favorite Greek goddesses. My growing conditions are so different than those in California that I can't offer much help on the rose itself, but it needed considerably more water in my Kansas garden than my other roses did. After every good watering, it would burst into bloom again. Some BS problems also here in Kansas, but they tell me CA doesn't have BS problems, so you are probably all right on that score. Supposedly can be grown in a bit of shade, but I'd recommend mostly sun--if you like lots of flowers. Update: several days later. Since we rarely see photos of Golden Showers on this forum, I thought I'd add a couple more now that more blooms are blooming. This rose is probably about 25 years old. Although it is a climber, I grow it more like a rambler or sprawling tall shrub. It's main limitations are that the blooms wilt quickly in the high heat of mid-summer, and it isn't the most disease-resistant climber, although it is not a disease-magnet either. Overall, it is a pretty good rose--willing bloomer when it is watered regularly and it's not too hot. Golden Showers Here is more of a close-up: It certainly blooms earlier in the season than many of my other roses. Since it's still overcast (although we haven't had much rain), its sunshiny colors sure are welcome. Kate

Thanks for your post. Golden showers was amongst the roses I got from Mitre 10 last year. I have it against a fence in sun. I bought quite a few and as there weren't many climbers I bought as many different ones as they had. That was in Yeppoon near Rocky so I am not sure what they will have in this time but I have seen in in Treloars catalogue this year. I found it so hard to stop at five roses and then ordered the veilchenblau. Just hope they grow now. Jan

Thanks everyone. I bought some more roses on Thursday from Mitre 10, angel face, champagner, duet and rotyal highness. 4 for $25.00 thought that was okay. Anyone know much about them?

I know that Champagner is lovely. Mine (the flower, that is) is on the small side but beautiful shape. Don't know much about the others.

Hi Jan,
I have Duet. I only planted it last season but it has never stopped blooming. It is continuously covered with blooms and buds and is one of my healthiest bushes. I got a fairly bad dose of black spot in March, but amongst the roses not affected was Duet. Many Coast rosies ask me what it is.
