Leander is a fine Austin rose. I say that because it is a more formal bloom, compact with many petals, with the appearance of a pompon dahlia. A unique colour, Grows straight up to 7-8'. Much better than the usual shattering blooms, and I've not seen it duplicated as are too many of the others. Haven't tried the perfume, though we've had it here for must be near 20 years. Will post a pic in a day or two.

Leander is a mythological Greek lover. And surely, Leander is a rose that is unique, especially in growth, colour and bloom shape.
I grow it. It is 3m high and it can grow even higher, it seems to me. Excellent climber in Oz, for sure. Love its colour, vigour and dahlia-like flowers. It has glossy leaves, in Hybrid Tea fashion.
But, it doesn't have strong fragrance. Just faint, tea scent. It disappears quickly. And it is not a terrific rebloomer too -- likes to sleep during the summer.
If you're after some rose of similar growth and colour, but much stronger fragrance, go after William Morris or Shropshire Lad, and both of them, accidentaly, belong into the same Leander Group of English roses.
Like Lozza said, Leander is a fine rose. I grow it because I'm sentimentalist, but to encourage you to look further, here is the Shropshire Lad, which has delicious fruity fragrance. Grows tall too (8-10ft).

Decisions, decisions. and how I have to make them,I did read in the help me find that Leander is good at overwintering so I guess it may have a bit of trouble in our Central Queensland heat do you think ?

How does Shropshire Lad go in the heat ?

Sometimes I think it would be nice to migrate back to Victoria just to grow roses the way you can down there.

As any other rose in Central Qld., Shropshire Lad will be both good and bad. Here in WA, in hot, dry weather it grows tall, and it smells nice too. But sandy soil prays for water, and you have to water it thoroughly. Not just that -- if you want it grow rapidly, you'll have to change the soil where it grows completely.
It prefers shaded position, wherever you grow it in Oz, so plant it somewhere in shade, close to house/shed/under the tree, and the foliage won't burn in the sun. And because it grows protected, you'll be awarded with even more fragrant blooms too.

Tom, that is stunning and the garden around it looks so lovely too.

What a lovely garden. it must bring you so much pleasure. Tell me everyone. Can I put roses in a garden that already has durantes, (white and mauve) pentis, lavender and a few bulbs and lilies? I took the geisha girl out as it seemed to be overpowering everything. Jan

Wow! That's just awesome with all those flowers. Oh if only my garden were bigger ...and to think my original plan had been to pave the whole backyard and avoid even grass. I am so looking forward to the arrival of my DA's on order and William Shakespeare's first bud. Go the ruffled flowers.

That is a beautiful rose and I must admit I like those full fluffy roses.
Now I am on the search for hot growers.
I do have a couple that are doing well, both in pots.

Marion, the little one at the bottom is 'Imp', an Australian bred floribunda rose bred by George Dawson, in the '80s if I recall correctly. Wrong again, 1971 it was. Time mooches on.
