Thai Gold is really beautiful, I must look out for it. I don't have any of the orange, and yellow ones as yet.

They are the brightest and the best in all the gardens round here at the moment and seem to thrive on the dry times better than anything.

Wow MM, I don't know how you can miss Melbourne's autumn colours with that spectacular Thai Gold and the very serene Jamaica Orange. All of them are just lovely.

Very nice, MM, but I wonder if our southern neighbours are aware of that many of us in 'Boug-land' regard them as a mixed blessing. Kept in check, they are fine, but they soon get way out of control if you turn your back on them :)

Had mine pruned to a stump 11 months ago, and it now looks like something from 'Day of the Triffids' ...

Thats what you are doing wrong Artie you dont prune then them leave them for 11 months you prune them a little bit and often then you land up with ones like this. Cheers..MM.

Those bougs are awesome!!

They are all stunning MM. I love them all. Are the 2 pink ones in the 2nd set of photo's dwarf varieties or just kept under control with pruning? I have Scarlett O'Hara on a front fence and my 'bloke' complains that it look like something from the Munsters or the Adams Family garden! We would both be happy if it looked like yours.

I always love seeing pics of your bougs MM, I think you must have the nicest bougs in the country, theyre amazing.

please give me some tips on how you prune that gorgeous purple one in the big white pot MM, my dwarf one is in a big planter and Im struggling to get that nice rounded shape, it's just sort of going out in all directions. should I cut it right back to fill it out do you think? so far Ive just been pruning small bits from the ends and no more than 1/3 but it looks nothing like yours! help me please :)

Thanks everyone: Heather the one in the pot is a dwarf ( they are both lilac ) What can I say I had S O Hara in Melb and I also have it here such a beautiful colour but all arms and legs that's for putting on your fence to stop anyone coming into your garden you can prune it and prune it so just keep at it. That lilac one up against the tree it was all arms and legs once too its a much bigger one and has taken me 3 1/2 to get it like that I kept pruning it when the canes get to say 60 cms cut 30 cms off then when it gets to that length again cut it again it will take a while but it will get there just keep pruning little bits at a time and it will get nice and bushy and wont be so tall and if it does get those extra long canes cut them off where they start you don't need them. Never prune when it is flowering and if you don't prune you wont get masses of flowers as they flower on new wood.

Hi there TG and yes I would cut to back to the shape you want after flowering then when it starts to shoot more leaves feed it with a slow release fertilizer. I always give them a small feed when the new leaves come. If you want to get it to a nice shape get some hedge shears on to it then you can trim it every time one pops out too long . I don't prune that one very much at all though it does have it spurts. You are doing the right thing TG just shape it first and prune it little and often that way it will sprout lots more. I have some slow release so I'll do that and I'll get onto it and give it a good prune when it stops flowering, Im glad to hear I can chop it back a bit too because Ive been a bit scared to do that. hedgeclippers, lol, I love it, it never even occurred to me to do that so Ive been gently snipping away with the secateurs!

you really do deserve all the compliments you get on your bougs, they really are gorgeous. If I can get mine to look even half as good as yours Ill be very happy! :)

I am growing it as a Weeper ( Bicycle wheel on tent pole ) three years it has been in and at long last it is showing signs of flowering properly not that it has much up top though but a lot more that it has had last year when this pic was taken, if you look at the pic below see the pink one on the left at the back 1 cm on top of that is some white you may be able to see the tent pole with the blue string on it, that white is the one I am taking about only this year it is bigger and I can see that the petals are going to be the two colours..Success at last!!
Foreground one bigger too this year I will have to hard prune it as too many long canes there this time due to a shoulder injury I cannot prune it properly even on a ladder and Hubby well Ohhh best I say nothing...

your standards are gorgeous mm, I love the idea of the recycled bike wheels on tentpoles they look great. yes I can see the white one in the background you must have a lot of patience mm. please post some more pics when theyre in full swing it would be great to see the new pics side by side and compare.

lol about hubby, I know that feeling (mine recently got 1/3 of the way through a small paving job and walked away from it so guess who ended up doing the other 2/3rds so we could finally walk on it, but what do you do?) :)

I hope your shoulder gets better soon, how frustrating only having one arm to work with!

MM, that standard Boug is sensational - so much better than any of the standard roses (evergreen, longer flowering, enormously drought-hardy and pest-resistant). I'm not normally a fan of the standard/topiary 'formal' approach, but there is just enough 'wild garden' in that standard to really float my boat.

Thanks Artie That limberlost beauty up the top of this post is a Weeping Standard also and I have another two out the back but they are only two years old got some blooms but not many yet and don't you just love them they flower for months that same flower not like some of my poor roses next to them that blooms only last one day..
