Standard Roses

Hi everyone,

I have one garden in front of my home but the sides of it only have grass so I decided this year to put some four standards on each side near the fence to align it to a colour. In the sides of the standards I will then fill with other types of roses. I want the same colour standards and ones that will flower all the time. Iceberg springs to mind but I would like to hear your experienced advice? Thanks.

Iceberg is a good one, so is bonica, a pink rose; seduction, of course, a delicate pink and lovely hand sized flower. Also la savilliana, a nice red; and for a yellow I don't think I'd go past friesia. Iceberg has no fragrance; bonica I'm not sure of; seduction a faint but delicious perfume under the first rays of the morning sun with the dew on the lawn; la savilliana a little but friesia is a definate nasal delicacy. Of course there are a number of others but these will flower practically all spring and summer and most of autumn, as I'm sure some others will, but this is just a small selection of standards readily available.

My seduction standard flowers all the time and is still has many blooms. Will you see the colors from inside the house via windows? I say this as you might want a color that you can live with for a long time if you are going to have 8 standards. I think iceberg is not the best choice as the blooms are very "ordinary" and do little for me. My choice would be crepuscle if you can get that in a standard - maybe as it is such a big rose it only comes in weeper varieties. My crepuscle weeper is in constant bloom and still is. So pretty.

I think there are so many choices that it will be fun for you deciding Hunty. I would go for a soft color in the standard and maybe a more vibrant color like yellow or a deeper pink in the roses underneath.

Ask Regan. For the rose history buffs, who might be out there, at the turn of the 19/20th century, most roses were sold grafted or rose gardens were started by planting rootstock one year and the next year roses were budded onto that rootstock. There was quite a bit of interest in where to do the budding and some roses were recommended for standard budding (2-3 feet above the ground) and others were recommended to be dwarfs, much closer to the ground. So in those cases, dwarfed roses does not have a logical meaning.

The first thing to find out is whether or not your garage is insulated. If it's insulated then it's pretty easy. 1. Wait until the temperatures are ~ - 6 C overnight. The next day, take all of the leaves off and water really, really well. 2. Take the rose into the garage and cover with blankets, sleeping bags, whatever. The pot should not be on the floor - but on a piece of wood or something insulating like that. 3. Leave the rose unbothered until about March. Actually I'm not sure how big a 10 gal pot is. With my pots I leave them alone until then. Then I water them with about 1/2 cup of water each month. 4. In the spring, gradually start taking blanket layers off until it's warm enough to take it outside during the day (around +5C). Each night bring it back into the garage (uncovered) until the outside NIGHT temperature is +5C. Then you can leave it outside day and night as long as the nighttime temperatures play nicely. 5. Remember to water really well once they get outside. I overwinter 50 rose bushes this way and have never had a loss. Good luck! Carol

You root a big long cane of rootstock then graft a rose bud on. Rooting a big cane is not easy especially if you do softwood rooting in Spring or Summer. You get better chance by hardwood rooting in Autumn. The first thing is to find a big long rootstock cane of Dr Huey or Multiflora ... to start with. If it's autumn rooting over Winter, just stick it down and forget about it. Next year they will grow. If you do Spring rooting of softwood young canes, you need to be very careful. here is how I do it at home and get near 100% sucess rate for Dr Huey and Multiflora - Take a 2ltr plastic milk bottle, punch holes at the bottom and pour in a mix of sand and peat. Soak it in water the first time. - Cut long canes, keep about 10 sets of leaves up the top, shear the bottom two nodes and apply rooting hormone - Insert about 10 canes in each bottle! No worry! use ties to hold them in a bunch, fan the top out to help the leaves to get light. - Lay the canes low about 1 foot off the ground and mist the top leaves or spray them by automatic timer every 2-3 hours for 4 weeks Ok, they would have lost all leaves after 4 weeks. Stand the canes up right in part shade. Pot them out when you see a lot of roots through the clear plastic of the milk bottle. Then you must master the art of budding or ship budding or grafting to get the rose buds on. I would suggest chip budding as it can be done most times of the year. -Dmaivn

Peach Drift standard rose throws out a sucker heading for the moon...

Well, I finally got around to digging out that sucker. I had sort of pulled it sideways when I found it, out from the middle of the Peach Drift. Then it grew another 3 feet sideways, and was blocking a path. No buds or anything - just heading for the moon. It had 7 leaflets on each leaf. It must have been some very old rose which blooms only on old growth. However, I decided not to wait 2 years for it to bloom, and just dug it up (did not root it because I don't need another huge once blooming climber). We were all correct - it was not "root stock" - it was "stem stock". Emerged from the trunk of the rose tree just 1-2 inches under the surface. So, it was easy to get rid of (fingers crossed). Then I put 3 Le Vesuve cuttings in our glassed in back porch to root - they are from the last bush I have which is a clone of our old ancient one, and I need to have at least 2-3 growing in the garden (we just lost one to DM - grrrrr..) so I don't lose it. Then I moved my growing rooted cutting of 'Arethusa' (yellowish china rose) from its one gallon pot next to the driveway to a huge pot on the patio. It has been very hot lately, and it was frying in its small pot with all of the reflected heat. It is now in full sun less hours, and in way less reflected heat, and in a huge pot which should protect its roots better. It was not happy at all, and was dying back. The point of all of this is that this is the FIRST day I have been out in the garden since early June. I somehow hurt one knee, and of course then the other one started hurting, so I sort of gave up. Now all better, so starting to triage the garden to see what has to happen to avoid rose death, and then going from there... Jackie

that is exactly what I had in mind!! As for the window..YES! my main window which is huge does show all of the frontyard garden. It is also an unusually big frontyard...with a rose filled garden in front...but all the rest of it is only grass...I think it will be fun to play with it.
I will check if I can find crepuscule as a standard...I grow it as a bush and she is fantastic for me. For some reason not so prolific this autumn but I have a theory I am feeding my roses wrong. I need to get serious with them.
I thought about Just Joey aswell but not knowing the exact colours...it may not be that soft.
Iceberg has that problem that you said...it is not as special now is it?

Hello,
I am a bit of an orderly soul, things have to have a colour scheme and size configuration. I have done pretty much what you are doing. I planted Burgundy Iceberg standards and white icebergs. Great for Brisbane climate, flower non stop and the two colours are quite formal and the flowers the same size. Control freakism at its best

Hunty, make sure that you get a really tall (6foot) standard for Crepuscule as she needs it to look good. She gets very heavy and needs a really strong support - a treated pine post is best. It seems like overkill when you first buy the rose but you will be pleased four years later.

Why do you want 8 standards? Here's me putting in my tuppence worth and I have not even seen your garden and I am new to this. I am learning that some roses, like dare I say it, two teas like Jean Ducher or Duchess of Brabant, that I have ordered I am hoping will flower a lot and be a reasonable height as is a standard. Jean Ducher would be a lovey soft colour and the height of her might look wonderful from inside, perhaps beside a lovely cream tea or china rose that I think are the wayb to go if what you want is a glorious view from inside the house as well as from out in the garden. You could also have some wonderful standards, perhaps in a cream (not white Iceberg but a softer colour with more interesting buds) or peach like the marvellous Just Joey that is always in bloom. Crepuscle would look good beside these as a bush or a climber over a fence or covering something that you wanted to obsure. I am learning that in design of gardens, green is a strong colour and so for maximum impact, the colors like peach and cream are already quite a lot of color and then if one adds some perennials in different shades that are related, like greeny grays and silvery white, it can look wonderful. I have ordered a number of creams but I do not think they all flower continuously alhtough one I am planting is a rose I have had for 8 years - Penelope and never let it have its head - I am now going to let it grow as a shrub as it flowers repeatedly and would look divine beside crespuscle, just joey or the teas I mentioned as it is cream with a soft pinky bud.

Gruss an Aachen is beautiful and makes an excellent standard. Sometimes cream sometimes pink. I think a row of 8 would be a sight to see.
