no privacy

this lizard perches on top of the greenhouse roof outside my bathroom, and gives me no privacy. He/she also drives the dog mad.

I know the feeling Alison...
My mate Spikey the Bearded Dragon sat on the side boundry fence for hours this morning.
Watching me prune the bougainvillea. Then when I finished it went on its merry way..
I am amazed that you have them with a dog there lucky you, it must keep out of the dogs way.
What kind of lizard is it do you know its quite long fancy draging that tail around.

If you have the money, schip cherry laurels are very good. I bought a 6 footer from Merrifield a couple of years ago. $200 as I remember. Unlike many other big evergreens--ie leland cypress--this one hasn't gotten much bigger than 8 feet. For my hedge, I bought 4 footers at $45 each, but have had to wait several years for them to hit 5-6 feet. They are growing in dry shade so the process is slow. You might be faster in full sun without having to compete with cherry roots.

I was in a really similar situation and ended up trying stained glass window film for daytime privacy. It worked out better than I expected. It gives you that extra privacy during the day, but still lets in plenty of natural light so the space doesn’t feel dark or closed off. One thing I liked is how easy it was to install. It just uses water to stick, so no permanent adhesive. And if you ever want to change it out later, you can just peel it off without damaging the glass. It felt like a simple, low-commitment solution that actually made a noticeable difference.

There are many varieties of conifers that are deer resistant and they come in all shapes and sizes. Junipers tend to be deer resistant, as well as many pines. You will also want to consider how fast they grow and the mature height. Many nurseries now state 10 yr size and NOT mature size. We had the same situation as you when we moved into our house. We wanted privacy but for it to look professionally landscaped. One of my favorites is Pinus nigra ‘Oregon Green’. We planted ours in a strategic location and it does a great job of creating the privacy we want, but we also have beds with native grasses and perennials around it, etc to provide intested and more privacy. The deer walk right past this conifer (and we have many in the yard now, mostly dwarf varieties). It is a beautiful conifer; another is Pinus leucodermis 'Kaleidoscope'. This Bosnian pine has lighter new growth. It is a smaller variety than the Pinus Nigra 'Oregon Green'. If you want to see interesting conifer varieties go to tinycones.com. Michael, the owner, is very knowledgeable and has a price list where you can see a large variety of conifer options. You can then look for one you want locally, as Mountain Meadows (tinycones.com) is in Weaverville, NC. They are still building the description of each conifer on their webpage, so some you need to copy, paste, and search for more info. I love the look of this design with conifers from finegardening. I am trying to replicate the weeping conifers to complete our front yard privacy area. Good luck

Oncape has a thrifty solution. Keep the chain link. Plant brambly bushes to cover the links...blackberry vines grow fast,and will give lovely fruit if you do not mind the occasional pruning. They will effectively deter looky loos and would be vaulters. Keep the garage drive open,but do install security lights and cameras to monitor the entries. Wooden fencing is a huge expense and calls for maintenance. The chain link once enhanced with foliage will look rather nice and give the best security.

That's a cutie and it beats the frogs that eye us off in the shower. At least he wouldn't try to have a shower with you :) Even though I know the frogs are there, I still jump when a frog lands on my bare shoulder.

Well, it was me who was the Peeping Tom, or rather the Hearing Harry...but not for long, I assure you.
My next door neighbour's house was put length-ways on the block and because we're in a cul-de-sac, it meant that the entire back of his house overlooks my front yard. He has an ordinary high-set house which means the bathroom which should have been overlooking his back yard, now overlooks my front yard....get the idea??
Well, ages ago, I'm weeding and playing in the side garden which runs along our mutual fence.
I hear him get into the shower...here, I should explain that this man is showering probably about 10foot away from me with an open window right there. I can't see into it, thank god, because it's higher but I can hear every breath he takes.....
Everything was fine until the wife joined him!!!!!!
At that point, I left!!!!!!!!
