Hello

Just wondering even what family this plant may be in. I Live in norther nsw and its very common along my creek ranging from a few metres on the rocks to larger 10m tall. The seed capsules have 3 compartments when they open up and are woody with lots of little seeds inside. Thanks. Luke

Can you post a clearer closeup of a twig showing leaf arrangement plus some opening capsules - or alternatively scan it on a flatbed scanner? I thought I could recognise most NSW trees & shrubs, but this one puzzles me. Euphorbiaceae mostly have 3-locular fruits, but not very woody and not with many small seeds in each compartment.

Maybe you could draw the attention of wooroonooran (Kris) to your posting. He visits this site occasionally and is more familiar than I with trees and shrubs of NE NSW. You can get his contact details from the post linked below.

Must plead guilty to never taking any photos. Got frustrated a few years ago when driving around England doing the touristy thing and looking for orchids here and there and of course finding none. Thanks chas Grevillea have beautiful flowers that one is endemic to our area I grow more plants from the seeds. I was given some seeds of the white Grevillea banksii two years ago and I am hoping that it will flower this year as I have never seen it in real life.. Inga Thank you once again.. I used to post photos a lot once but no one replied so I joined another Australian Forum I often post on GW US site I put Orchids on this week for ID. My roses are blooming at present as I grow them in our Winter, and let them go into dormancy in the Summer when it is too hot.. I will post some tomorrow for you promise.. [/i] I suspect that you are right - I have even seen it at Bunnings, but I can accept that it may be endangered in terms of its numbers in the wild. Large tracts of Byfield have been subsumed for commercial timber plantations, and I'm sure that other parts of it were cleared for agriculture back when few realised the value of virgin bushland. One of the locals sells ferns at the Rocky markets, and he recalls seeing 'huge' Byfield ferns (Bowenia Serrulata) being torn out of the ground by bulldozers - particularly tragic when you realise how slow these plants are to reach maturity. On a happier note, I consider both the flower and foliage of G. Venusta to be extremely attractive, and even more so when companion planted with its hybrid, G. 'Orange Marmalade' (G. venusta X G. glossadenia). A real contrast to the lighter, sparser foliage of the other tropical Grevilleas in my front garden. Cheers, Artie

Luke,
its a Tristaniopsis laurina (Myrtaceae).
Strictly a riparian species.
It is basically the Xanthostemon of the southern rainforest riparian niche. In the Wet Tropics we have Tristaniopsis exiliflora which is a close relative of T.laurina.
Can be grown readily by seed and can be established away from water.
You guys down there also have Tristaniopsis collina which grows at higher elevation and often is association with temperate rainforest (at least in the Tweed area).
