soil to dry and dusty, want to make a fernery

gday, just outside our bathroom is a small area with a couple of weeds, a philodendron and a native spikey grass thing, the soil is quite dry and dusty, we want to add a small pond for frogs and plant ferns and other shade loving natives, any idea what we can do to the soil, i want to get rid of the philodendron and the weeds and have birds nest ferns, elk horn on the wall and other small nitive ferns and possible terrestrial orchids growing around the pond, any idea's? can you please email me at demonology_and_heartache891@hotmail.com as i will probably forget to check here, thanks guys, oh also i'm just north of brisbane, thanks
