clematis and snail creeper in Subtropics?

Jan, I have tried and failed with Clematis on the Gold Coast and that unfortunately is even with the native ones.
Snail vine is surviving I think they really do better in a cooler climate so they get a little rest.
However I have growing, a climbing dicentra which is definitely meant for cooler climates but doing OK in a spot protected from wind and with a very thick stone mulch to keep the roots cool
That might be the trick for Rockhampton. I have some snail vine seedlings up just in small tube size If you would like to give them a go I will send them up for the price of the postage. Contact me privately through "My page" with your address if interested.

Jan if you plant snail vine, keep an eye on it. Mine didn't do much the first year but after that it just took off. It went up through the trees and into the neighbour's place and then came back!

It's taken years for the seedlings to stop coming up.

I haven't had much luck with Emerald gaiety...mine grew more as a small groundcover / creeper and never did much of anything - perhaps the crown gall disease was to blame -but I chucked them all. I do have two Sarcoxie Euonymus on my property - one in full sun from midday on, and the other in full shade. They both have done well for me with the exception of scale on the one in full shade last year. In full shade, I've seen no blooms but it hasn't established as long as the other has. The full sun Sarcoxie gets a beautiful carpet of purple flowers on the groundcreepers, but it took a good 4 years to get there. It branches both vertically and horizontally along my 4 1/2 foot fence. I trim the branches at fence height, so I don't know how tall this plant will actually climb on an arbor or trellis. It's a nice evergreen branching habit along my fence. This was one of the first plants in my yard as a newbie, and I couldn't be happier. No problems with scale in the sunny location (keeping my fingers crossed). Unfortunately, my new rescue dogs like to pottie where the branches creep as a groundcover, causing dieback in those areas, so I didn't get the flowers this past year.

OT question - Is this a clematis bloom?

It's no problem, Xuan... I'm happy to help enable you! My only hope is that Clematis will take kindly to your climate, and grow well for you. Clematis like their heads in the sun, and their feet kept cool... we do this either by using a thick layer of mulch, or under-planting the vine with a thick-growing ground cover that will help shade the root area. I don't think you'll have too many problems starting the seeds, but once the vine grows a bit, I hope it can survive and thrive in your hot climate. Also... there are different types of Clematis... I get confused all the time, and have to go reread my information... I believe there are three types, and they all require different pruning techniques to flower well. One type can be cut back quite a bit each year, while another type only flowers on the previous year's wood and must be pruned differently, and one type is autumn-blooming, etc... so, my advice is to read up on the different types before you begin. I'll let you know which type I send seeds from so you'll know what the proper method of pruning is, and how to best take care of your vines. It sounds like a pain in the butt, but once you see a large Clematis in full bloom up close, you'll be amazed! They are beautiful vines, and totally worth the effort! I've never tried to grow Passiflora, even as just an annual fence climber... I should give it a go next spring. Usually, annual vines grow slowly here until late summer, and then they go nuts as the weather begins to cool a bit! Last year, I had gorgeous Mina Lobata and Cup & Saucer Vine, and my Morning Glories covered a huge fence area and bloomed beautifully! This year, the poor weather has really hampered my attempts to grow nice vines. I just now am bumping up seedlings into 3" pots, and will plant them by the fence as soon as they gain a bit of size and strength. The only climbers that are doing well this year are the roses, although, this is what I've been hoping for since they were planted three years ago! Chaz - It's probably best that you can't have a dog, given the current condition of most breeds, genetically speaking! I weep for Man's Best Friend, and the poor state of canine affairs... it's just deplorable what most breeds have become in the hands of irresponsible and greedy breeders... and I use that term loosely! And the registries, which the general public thinks they can trust, are the greediest of all, registering anything as long as that check clears! They don't research pedigrees, even though they claim to... pedigrees and dog papers are among the easiest forgeries to create and pass off as authentic... and they don't have the future welfare of the dogs in mind at all! If they did, there would be a lot less rescue organizations and shelters in existence! And anyone who thinks I'm wrong should go take a look at the digs where these registries are headquartered... very expensive! The whole thing is a very sore subject with me, mainly because we've taken so much flack over the years for culling hard and not selling to every tom, dick, and harry with a wad of cash in hand... and because I've watched the very breed I love so much go down the toilet, and become nothing more than an unhealthy version of what it should be, able to do little more than parade around a show ring!

I normally don't do favourite anything but the Jade Vine, Strongylodon macrobotrys, is utterly magical. The colour of the foot long blossom panicles is an unearthly greenish turquoise like no other plant I have ever seen. There is no chance of my ever growing one as I do not have a giant greenhouse but I have visited a couple in various botanical gardens, including the one at the link, and am always completely stunned by them. Jan, I had a snail vine and if anything has the wrong name that is it, I called it Mile a Minute as once it got going it took over, took a long time to finally get rid of it as it seemed to sucker up quite a bit as well as the seedlings.
Lovely to see in flower though.
I am in the Rockhampton area.

I've tried clematis in Sydney and it wasn't much chop. I had the right conditions, cool roots, sun at the top, but most of the time it looks dead. It heaves itself into flower in the spring and summer for a bit, then whinges about the heat for the rest of the time. It's about to come OUT!

So I don't like its chances in Rockhampton. I'm surprised they even sell it there.

They don't sell clematis in Rocky to my knowledge but because I tend to be a bit stubborn, I ordered one through tesslaar and just wanted to see if I could strike it lucky. what colour was yours?

Hi Wishful Clematis Growers (why do we always want to grow stuff which is a challenge). The four types of clematis which have potential to grow well in Queensland are C. Cirrhosa, C. Armandii (beautiful pink or white flowers), C.Chrysocoma (flower similar to C. Montana), and C. Florida, and C. Paniculata (scented). All are everygreen and flower autunm/winter.
